February is Black History Month. In order to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of African-Americans throughout our history, we will highlight an extraordinary individual each morning. Today we spotlight Colin Powell. Colin Powell was born on April 5th, 1937, in Harlem, NY to Jamaican immigrant parents. He was raised in the South Bronx, educated in the New York City public schools and attended City College of New York, where he joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) where he became commander of his unit. This experience set him on a military career and gave him structure and direction in his life. Colin Powell rose to the rank of a four-star general in the US Army. He was the first, and so far only, African-American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was also the first African-American Secretary of State, serving under President George W. Bush.
