March 12, 2026

Today is an even day.

March is Women's History Month. The theme for Women's History Month 2026 is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future”. Today we recognize the achievements of Alice Ball. Alice Ball was an African American chemist who developed the first successful treatment for those suffering from Hansen’s disease (leprosy). Ball was also the very first African American and the first woman to graduate with a M.S. degree in chemistry from the College of Hawaii. Tragically, Ball died at the young age of 24. During her brief lifetime, she did not get to see the full impact of her discovery. It was not until years after her death that Ball got the proper credit she deserved.

There will be no after school credit recovery and no clubs today, due to Department meetings.

Did you know that one pint of blood can save the lives of FOUR people? William Floyd will be hosting a blood drive for students and staff to donate on Wednesday, March 25th in the East Gym from 8am-12:30pm. All students require a signed permission slip to donate. Students must be at least 16 years old to donate. Free snacks for those who donate! If you are interested in becoming a donor, please see the Lead Nurse in the West Nurse office for a permission slip. Let's do this Floyd! If we total 50 pints of blood, a William Floyd student will be eligible for a scholarship!
