Family and Community Medicine

Community Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with the health of population and uses population health knowledge and skills to play leading and collaborative roles in the maintenance and improvement of the health and well being of the community.

Family medicine is devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. It is a division of primary care that provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and their families across all ages, genders, diseases, and parts of the body. It is based on knowledge of the patient in the context of the family and the community, emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion.

The broad goal of teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students in this branch is to prepare them to function as community and first level physicians in accordance with the institutional goals, preventive and social medicine and to plan, implement and evaluate health programs to effectively meet population needs.

The Department of Family and Community Medicine is located in the main building of the school of Medicine (first floor), with two halls for practical sessions.
