Kia Ora,
Welcome back! We have had a great start to the Term. It has been wonderful to see learners settling back into school and getting stuck into their learning. We are safely ensconced on the field this year and are revelling in the contrast between the balmy heat outside and the soothing air-conditioned temperatures within our hub walls.
Please take the time to read this update and the reminders below.
LEARNING THIS TERM
Our learning for the start of Term 1 is based around walking in someone’s else shoes, appreciating and exploring diverse perspectives, learning about diversity and difference around the world, as well as in our hub and empathy skills.
To begin to tackle this often challenging conceptual idea, we will first be looking at what puts us in the learning pit and what responsibility we can take for clambering out of it. We are actually basing our learning around the 17 global goals, or what our planet is currently in the learning pit with!
We have been looking at discrepancies between housing, access to education, fresh water and how we can begin to think about being problem solvers for some of these 21st-century problems.

Meet the Teacher Evening
We are holding a ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening in Hub 10 on Thursday February 21st, starting at 4:30pm. We’ll be introducing ourselves and answering any questions you might have about the school (and intermediate years) here at Stonefields. The evening will be followed by a picnic on the field. We’d love to have you along.
REMINDERS
School Information
The Stonefields School App is a great place to receive all notifications and school information. Another place to find information is our school website. Link to website communication page.
School Uniforms
Please ensure all school items are named. This includes lunchbox, school bag, all clothing, hats, etc.
Lost items are regularly sent to the red lost property cupboard outside the Akomanga Koru, (previously the library). The summer uniform consists of a short sleeve polo shirt, shorts for boys and skorts for girls. Shoes are black and hair accessories are to be in our school colours. This also includes a wide-brimmed navy or black hat.
Sickness
If your child is sick and has been vomiting or had diarrhoea, we would advise that they remain at home to recover, and to prevent other children from getting sick. Your support with this would be appreciated. Use the ‘Absentee’ tab on the School App to let us know your child is absent. Alternatively call the office on 527 7721 or email admin@stonefields.school.nz
School Hours
Learners are able to enter the Hub from 8:30am onwards, with our school day beginning at 8:55am and finishing at 3pm.
Please note that teachers have professional development every Thursday from 7:30am and will not be back in the hub until 8:45am. If your child arrives earlier we suggest you consider our Out of School Care programme, which is run by an outside provider called Kelly Club. The programme runs everyday in the school hall before and after school. Please contact the office for more information.
Food & Waste
Stonefields School is an Enviro School and we aim to minimise the quantity of waste that we produce here. We encourage our students to keep food wrappers at home, and to keep food waste in their lunch boxes. Brain food is vital for children during their learning. Lollies and treats need to be left at home please. We appreciate your support with this.
Assessment
We will be starting our assessment in Week 4 Monday 25th February and will be completed by Week 6.
Volunteers
As always, we love having your support within the hub. If you are available to offer your time in any of the following areas could you please let us know:
- Break Through
- Spelling testing
- Reading mileage (Reading Rocks)
- Returning readers to the resource room
- Laminating & cutting resources
Please note we value any time that you can spare.
Our doors are always open and we are happy to have a chat before or after school. If you have any questions or concerns and need a longer time to meet with us, please contact us to make a scheduled time to connect. Please note that we have our scheduled PLD meetings on Thursday mornings before school, so we are unable to meet during this time.
We both love to share our learning with you in the hub via Twitter, so please feel free to follow our twitter handles (and like our posts….not that it’s a competition….ahem) to see all the amazing learning which we are doing in Akomanga Tekau
We look forward to meeting you all and hope you are able to attend the 'Meet the Teacher' evening of Thursday 21st February in Week 3.
