Update 17 - 17 October, 2019
Welcome Back, Naumai Haere Mai
Tēnā Koutou Katoa,
Welcome to the start of Term 4 of the 2019 school year.
A warm welcome to all our new families and members of staff. We hope you had a lovely holiday and were able to enjoy the time off with family and friends.
The start of term Pōwhiri held on Monday was a wonderful and empowering way to commence the new term.
We are always very grateful for the support and hospitality that Kaumatua Tautoko, or Papa Big as he is known to us, gives through this rich, cultural welcome celebration and blessing.
Critical to Learn Survey
This year we have been engaged in a community-wide conversation about what is critical to learn? and what is critical to know?. What learning matters so much that it cannot be left to chance and should make up a learner's 8-year curriculum entitlement at Stonefields School.
Part of implementing this strategic goal involved having deep conversations with a representative group of Stonefields School parents. We engaged an external facilitator with expertise in design thinking to carry out these conversations on behalf of the School. The conversations were recorded, summarised and the ‘pains’ and ‘gains’ for these 16 parents were synthesised. A survey has been developed to validate the findings. We need to hear your voice to understand what is important to you so this can be woven into your child’s educational experience at Stonefields School
We appreciate that you have recently completed a survey for the School. We are grateful to the 66% of our community who completed the survey. Your voice sincerely informs future decision making and strategy. Stonefields School has always strived for continuous improvement and ensuring we do the very best by our learners and their families.
We ask that you take this much shorter survey to help us make important decisions about the learning that is too important to leave to chance. The survey is anonymous and we value your honest feedback.

Closing Date: 3pm, Friday 18th October 2019
We look forward to sharing these insights with you soon.

Manaiakalani Film Festival
On Wednesday 13th November, we will be attending our annual Manaiakalani Film Festival at Hoyts Sylvia Park. This is an exciting day where we get to view the movies we have created by sharing them on the big screen. We’ll also be treated to watching other movies from around the cluster. Learners and teachers will be travelling by bus. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough room in the cinemas for parents to attend with us. However, you will get a chance to view all of the movies online after the Film Festival. Please talk to the Hub teachers about what time your child’s Hub will be going to the cinema if you are wanting to book any appointments for your child on this day.

Shading Fundraising
Today our learners participated in ShakeOut. We signalled over the PA system and practiced the Drop, Cover and Hold. ShakeOut is held across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake, and to practice a tsunami hīkoi (evacuation) if in a coastal area. ShakeOut also gives learners tips on preparing for earthquakes and other emergencies, making emergency plans, what to do when the shaking stops.
Lost Property
The lost property cupboard has been cleared out. There is a box of items in the hall. If you are missing a lunchbox, water bottle, shoes etc, please check the box by th end of the school day on Friday, 18th October. Anything remaining in the box will be donated to charity.
Sport
As part of our Schoolwide conversation about what is critical to learn and know?, we are inviting you to join us for an open forum on Tuesday 22nd October to discuss the sports opportunities we currently provide and discuss the future sporting aspirations you have for your children at Stonefields School.
We will be running two sessions, the first session starting at 2:30pm and the second session starting at 5:30pm in Hub 3 (up the red staircase)
We are estimating the sessions to last no longer than an hour.
During this time we will:
- be discussing what we have been noticing in regards to children's physical development and sporting participation;
- share some of the changes we have been making and the reasons why;
- together discuss and brainstorm future possibilities and next steps;
As always, we sincerely value your thoughts and look forward to exploring these ideas with you.

Would you like to share your views on food and your child’s learning?
… and be part of a research project that is exploring what parents think and feel about food and children’s learning. Can or does food affect your child’s learning?
My name is Lauren. I am a trained primary school teacher, currently working in the health industry. I am doing this research for my Master’s in Educational Psychology.
Who can join?
Any parent can join. You can do this on your own or with a friend or a group of friends. Your participation is absolutely voluntary.
What does it entail?
Timewise from your side, it would involve an initial meeting or phone call so we can arrange to meet, then a 45-60 minute interview and finally about 30 minutes to check the summary of my interview afer a few weeks. We can do this via email or in person, whatever suits you.
When would this take place?
For those who volunteer, your interview will take place at a time and place that suits you, during Term Four 2019 or Term One 2020.
What happens with your information?
The information you as a parent gives that may identify you will be confidential and only known to me and my University Supervisors. Any other information that could identify you, including the name of the school, will be removed. The interviews will be audio recorded, if you agree to this, so that I can write up the interview afterwards. After completion of my project in November 2020, all information will be deleted. If you would like, at the end of my project, I can email you a summary of my findings.)
If you would like to participate, or want more information, feel free to email, phone or text. Lauren will through a full information sheet explaining in more detail.
