Akomanga Rua (Hub 2)

Kia Ora Whanau,

Welcome back to the chilly Term 2. We hope all our Akomanga Rua families had a wonderful break with learning juices recharged and ready to squeeze. It was wonderful to meet all of our families at meet the teacher in term one and then enjoy some quality time together at the annual sleepover and we look forward to getting to know our new families as the school year progresses. Akomanga Rua has a very exciting term of learning ahead! Please take some time to read our upcoming concept, events and reminders. Remember to mark your calendars!

Welcome

A very warm welcome to Sylvia Kavanagh who is joining the Akomanga Rua team while Hayley Hindson is off on medical leave. Annegrid Price who will be joining the team as a teacher aide and facilitating rich learning opportunities for the learners to immerse themselves in. Lastly, we would like to welcome the new learners who have transitioned from Akomanga Koru, Sophia, Isabella, Reece, Aria, Jim, Harry, Neil, and Emily.

Communication

A friendly reminder that Year 1 & 2 learners are still developing their interpersonal skills. As teachers, we are here to support and navigate the social developments of all of our learners. Our doors are always open if you have any concerns please come and speak to us. We are happy to spend time with and guide the learners to successful resolutions.

Toys at School

We appreciate the children enjoy sharing their precious toys with their friends but we do not encourage learners to do so. If you could please remind your learners to leave these at home to ensure they do not get broken or lost.

Think Snack

In Hub 1 we will have a ‘Think snack’, which learners will eat around 10 am. This is optional, not compulsory. It gives our learners an opportunity to have a quick snack while they are learning. The Health organisation refer to ‘smart snacking’, where people feel more energised, can help with concentration and memory.

For this to work, and not compromise learning time. We are asking for learners to bring in a vegetable or piece of fruit which is preferably sliced or peeled, wrapped separately or in a container, which is named.

Learners will bring it into the hub before school along with their book bag and be placed in the container. There will be several containers labelled for easy access.

SchoolTalk

SchoolTalk is a great app that allows you and your child to see and chat about what they are learning each day. You will see a calendar with timetabled events, if you click on these events, most of the events will show the modelling book or learning design for that lesson.

Goals: Learning goals can be uploaded by the teacher. When that learning goal has been achieved the box will turn green. If your child is working on that goal then it will be yellow.

Note: We are currently teaching the children how to use SchoolTalk in their learning and how to upload evidence to SchoolTalk. This process takes time so please be patient as it can be a complex tool for 5 and 6 year olds to use.

Concept Focus

Our concept for Term 2 is called “Community. This concept taps into our School Values “Being my best self” “Bringing our best together”By making connections between myself, and others to understand my place in the world, Akomanga Rua will be delving into their ’ identity, knowing and understanding their likes and dislikes - knowing what our passions, strengths and weaknesses are and learning to express what fills our kete and what we can do to fill them. Understanding who we are and how we fit into this world is a critical part of our learners’ overall development. Our learners are discovering many new things for the first time, which can be overwhelming! Being able to explore our identity together allows us to grow and develop our values and understand the diverse perspectives that surround us.

School Hours

A friendly reminder that the hubs open from 8:30 am please ensure that if your learner arrives at school before this time they are booked into Kelly Club - Please book them in. Celia Mackinven stonefields@kellyclub.co.nz. Alternatively please ensure you are onsite supervising your learner up until this time. School starts at 8:55 am if you arrive after this time your learner will be marked as late. If your learner is going to be late or is absent please email the hub teachers and the office. Teachers will also be attending professional learning every Thursday from 7:30 am until 8:45 am.

Sickness

If your child is sick and has been vomiting or had diarrhoea, please keep them home so other children in the hub and teachers do not get sick. We prefer that the children stay at home for 48 hours after their sickness so the bugs cannot be passed on.

School Uniforms

A friendly reminder that we are entering the chilly months of the year and fleeces are necessary for those chilly mornings and when we are outside. Please ensure your fleece is well named - we recommend getting your name embroidered on as this eliminates the chance of it getting lost. We are also encouraging shoes to be labelled or have something unique on them as we have many learners that take off and misplace their shoes during the day - this includes socks. The correct uniform of a polo shirt, shorts/skort with black tights only/uniform long pants is to be worn to school each day, these can be purchased through the school website or the 2nd hand uniform shop.

A friendly reminder that head lice are always around. If your child has shoulder length hair it needs to be tied up in a ponytail and please regularly check your child’s hair for lice, especially if you see them scratching!

Lunch Boxes

In Hub 2 we will have a ‘Think snack’, which learners will eat around 10 am.

If you are unsure, please ask your hub teacher and they are happy to discuss this further. Stonefields School is proud to be Enviro School, to ensure we remain litter free we recommend the reusable containers that are easily accessible to your learner and all rubbish to be taken home.

Kiwisports

As part of our physical education this term, our learners will be participating in weekly sessions of Taekwondo. We start on Monday 6th May and finish on Monday 6th June. The taekwondo programme is an exciting initiative to help our Kiwi Kids develop their gross motor skills, sportsmanship, communication and general physical capabilities. Please ensure your child wears socks and shoes so that they can easily take these off during the lesson (instead of stockings).

These skills include:

    • Physical movement skills
    • Gross Motor coordination
    • Sportsmanship. Understanding there is more to playing games than winning and losing

Learner Led Conferences

This term Wednesday 5th June (Week 6) Stonefields School is hosting an evening where you have the opportunity to immerse yourself with your child's learning journey and ask any questions pertaining to their learning needs. There is always plenty to do and see so bring along your picnic blanket and enjoy a picnic and the entertainment with your family.

However, If you would like to spend more than 2 minutes one on one with the teacher we recommend you book an appointment with us as there are many parents we are meeting this evening.

Home Learning

Home learning in Hub 2 will consist of a range of readers in their book bag; 1x reader at their level which will be their guided reading book and 2x readers that are easier and will allow them to read with confidence and ease. You should see these in their books bags already.

Each week we will focus on one poem a week, which we encourage you to re-read with your child over the week and revisit in following weeks - especially the favourites!
