The 2010 Newbery Winner is When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. Miranda lives in New York City in the 1970s with her mother. I was sure this was a historical fiction novel until the very end when I realized it is fantasy. You'll have to read it to find out WHY! The ending was very unexpected for me.
