The Boxcar Children series has been around since the 1920s. The original stories were written by Gertrude Chandler Warner. The first book in the series introduces the four orphan siblings, Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny. Upon the death of their parents, the children don't want to go live with their grandpa that is rumored to be mean. So, they go off to live on their own and find an abandoned boxcar to call home.

In other stories in the series, the children solve mysteries and have adventures. This series is still popular because the stories are endearing and an interesting read. If you wonder what it would be like to be independent, pick up one of the Boxcar Children books.
