Newbery Honor book, Feathers, by Jacqueline Woodson is based on a quote by Emily Dickinson, "Hope is the thing of feathers . . ."

This historical fiction story set in the racial divided 1970s finds a WHITE boy in Frannie's school class. When students start calling him Jesus Boy, this raises new questions for Frannie and her friends. While this appearance upsets the balance at school in unexpected ways, Frannie finds her mother is expecting another baby after losing several babies. All of these issues cause Frannie to confront some of her fears and to help her examine what she knows, believes and hopes.
