October is the month of Halloween when all things scary are embraced. In this spirit, I read the new book by Mary Downing Hahn, Deep and Dark and Dangerous. The picture on the cover is scary enough for this thrilling page turner.

Ali is 13 years old when she finds a picture of her Mother, Aunt Dulcie and someone else at their summer lake home in Maine. However, the someone else is ripped out of the picture. Ali's mother won't answer any questions about it and sinks back into her normal state of anxiety and depression after seeing the picture.

When Aunt Dulcie invites Ali to accompany her to spend the summer at the lake home babysitting her five year-old cousin, Emma, Ali jumps at the chance. She wants to know more about who this person in the picture is and why her mother and aunt act so skiddish whenever Ali asks about the mysterious picture. She hopes to discover more by returning to the lake home where the picture was taken. Nothing could have prepared Ali for what happens that summer. To discover what Ali finds, read Deep and Dark and Dangerous.
