Speaking activities in class consisted of mostly TQE discussions or fishbowl discussions along with group discussions to prepare. Before classes I would read the assigned pages for the week and annotate to understand more about the novel. Sometimes I'd prepare questions that were very open to interpretation, I just liked listening to my classmates answers.. Whilst in dsicussions, I'd also take notes and furthermore add on to my friend's ideas and give my opinion.
Academic Growth
Participating in TQE discussions and fishbowl conversations significantly enhanced my academic skills, especially in critical thinking and textual analysis. These activities pushed me to dive deeper into the text, develop insightful questions, and connect ideas across different parts of the material. Preparing for discussions in small groups allowed me to clarify my understanding and organize my thoughts before speaking, which improved both my comprehension and communication. I also became better at citing evidence to support my ideas and learned how to respectfully challenge others' interpretations, which are key skills in academic discourse. Over time, I grew more confident in contributing meaningful insights during class discussions, showing real growth in my ability to engage with literature and academic texts.
Personal Growth
On a personal level, these speaking activities helped me build confidence in sharing my voice and ideas in front of others. At first, speaking up in fishbowl discussions felt intimidating, but with practice, I became more comfortable expressing myself, even when my perspective differed from others. I also learned the value of active listening--really paying attention to what my peers were saying, not just waiting for my turn to speak. Working in groups taught me patience, collaboration, and how to give and receive constructive feedback. Overall, these experiences helped me become a more thoughtful communicator and a more empathetic classmate, skills that will benefit me beyond the classroom.
