Unit 2 Essential Question: How is the physical and social world constructed?
I. Reflections
Region Mini Project Reflection
For this mini project, I chose the country Saudi Arabia. I chose this country because it is influenced my culture and my religion which really made me want to dive deeply into this country even more and learn about it's regions and it's special characteristics which are different to other countries that I have also known about. Within the process of my research, I learnt many things about this country, whether it's the cities of the country or the contrasting opinions of each individual on the "good places" and the "bad places" of the country, it really showed me how diverse each country can be from each other and how time, environment and people can affect so much on a singular country. In the end, I didn't get such a high score because Saudi Arabia isn't such a popular country which means it was hard tryin gto find perceptual and functional maps, therefore I had to use very vague-looking maps and use the best of knowledge to find suitable information for each part. Other than that, I could have done a bit better in making the presentation of the poster look a bit better and be more careful with what decisions I make before diving deep into the contents of this project. But overall, I'm glad I got to learn about a new country and apply my knowledge of regions from class to this, hopefully I'll get to learn more new countries and strive for better.
Treasure Map Reflection
Overall, this was my favourite project so far in these two units, as it not only let me apply my art skills, but also my creativity and a combination of knowledge towards maps and the information I learnt in class. Honestly, the process of making this treasure map was a bit tragic as I did procastinate and I had to cram all in one night, I'm proud and glad that I ended up with a great outcome. At first I planned/sketched out the outline of my map and then I started going into detail and drawing smaller aspects of the map whilst creating, making up random country names and cities for my treasure map. Other than drawing, at the end, I had to come up with clues for my map treasure hunt, I didn't really use any references but I did try to use my knowledge on treasure maps from past movies and TV shows and it turned out well. My treasure map hunt came out well and my classmates even had a little of a hard time trying to solve it too since they actually had to use a ruler and be percise with movements. Contrary to that, I also did my classmate's treasure map hunts and turns out some people also had really nice-looking maps and I'm glad to see that other people also put a lot of effort in it as I did as well. Some people had really tricky maps to solve but some were quite simple, it was fun trying to do all of them and seeing how diverse each person can think. To conclude, I put much effort into this project as I used my art skills, creativity and knowledge on maps in order to finish this mini project and learn so much from my peers.
Country Research Project Self-Reflection
Overall, this was definetly one of my favourite projects this year as it showed me many new things and let me explore new topics. While working on this project there were many things that surprised me, whether it's the unique information about that country, the diverse options we got to choose from or even the formate of this project. I was shocked by many information about the country Slovakia ranging from it's landscapes to it's development - they all seemed so fascinating to me as I got to explore a new country. Other than that, we got six project formats which was shocking to me since whenever there was a project, there would be limited options. I was able to explore with a new topic I've never created before - a website. Although creating a website was new for me, it actually felt quite easy to do and I kindoff flowed through each section as it felt really fun to research. Even though I had fun, it was still slightly challenging when sorting out information and keeping a limit to each sub-topic because I wanted to explore more about this country and add even more information but of course, time and effort exists so I tried to stay balanced. If I could to change something about this project, I would give my students an option to research two or more countries and do the exact same assigment but instead, students will also get to compare and contrast different countries and get a better understanding of them. In conclusion, this project went smoothly for me and I loved the topics, aspects I learnt about Slovakia - as I got the chance to grasp another country's features rather than the countries I already know about. Additionally, I am also quite proud of myself for dedicating quite an amount of effort into the project from researching each topic, finding aesthetically pleasing pictures to being patient and taking hours of my free time to do this. Honestly, it was so fun that it felt like it was a part of my free time and I'd be happier than ever to go through a similar experience like this again in the future with possible projects like these.
Overall Unit Reflection
Compared to Unit 1, this unit was better in all terms. Whether if it's the ways that benefited me knowledgeably, or if it's the information I truly enjoyed learning. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the topics in Unit 1 but personally, I love Geography and how it shapes our world, so when I knew that I got to learn about this topic in Unit 2, I was excited. Other than that, what I enjoyed most were the projects I did this year, since I enjoy doing projects so much more than doing little quizzes or tests because it lets me be creative and it lets me apply all my knowledge towards a certain chosen topic that I like. There wasn't anything specific I enjoyed most but I enjoyed all the topics learnt in this Unit, whether it's about our planet's landforms, regions or most importantly, the five themes of geography. Again, there wasn't really anything I disliked this Unit but compared to all the topics, I did find map projections slightly more challenging as each map projection had so much detail and it was a bit hard to find the differences between map deformations, but still, it was fun learning about something so new since I have only been looking at one map my whole life. What I didn't like about this Unit was the time that took me to do these projects, especially the Country Research project as it took me MANY hours to complete, but to balance that out, I enjoyed all the projects this Unit and it made my hate for time-consuming activities dissapear as I was able to end up with a great outcome for my projects. In conclusion, this Unit's information, projects and activites all benefitied me through many ways whether it was educationally or just creatively, I got to learn new things and furthermore practice my sense of organization through projects and teamwork through activies in class.
