UNIT 1 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: WHAT CONTRIBUTES TO OUR IDENTITY?
UNIT 1 NOVEL
A coming-of-age novel about 12-year-old Malú, who embraces her Mexican heritage and punk rock spirit while navigating the ups and downs of middle school. As Malu questions what makes u her identity, she goes through a web of consequences within her cultures and hobbies.
ARTIFACTS - ESSAY & PROJECT
As for this project, each student was assigned to make an 8 page zine that shows/discusses the elements that make up their identity. We were assigned to do zines for this unit because in our first novel, Malu also expresses herself through her zines.
LINK TO ZINE "My Identity"
ZINE Reflection
This project was without a doubt one of the best I had the opportunity to work on during my years of schooling. Because, unlike other projects, this one allows me to express myself and gain a greater grasp of the phrase "who am I?" This does not mean that I am limited to doing anything specific, because I am free to express myself through my own word choices and imagery. Another reason I enjoyed this activity is that I got to do it independently. I'm not a fan of working in groups because it's difficult for me to think silently, so making this an individual project was a thoughtful choice by the teachers. It takes a lot of effort to complete 8 pages, especially since it is about myself, so it has definitely made me reconsider my time management. Aside from that, it effortlessly showed me the components of my identity, clearly allowing me to better understand myself by learning the things that form my identity.
For this personal narrative, I was assigned to show my experience about soemthing that happened within a short amount of time in this essay.
Personal Narrative Reflection
This essay is also one of the greatest I've written so far, in comparison to the others. Unlike other essays, personal narratives are first-person essays that SHOW rather than TELL what happens throughout an experience, which is what I particularly enjoy about this essay. I don't particularly enjoy formal essays that persuade or inform others, but I do enjoy essays that allow people to get a glimpse of your experience while reading your article, essays that allow you to express yourself, and this essay was ideal for my preferences. I was able to express myself in a variety of ways in this writing, including metaphorical language and sensory elements. I wrote about a negative experience I had in a convenience shop, and those components allowed me to express my anger, embarrassment, and uneasiness about the situation. As a result, writing this essay provided me with a deeper understanding of my thoughts and feelings; also, it allowed me to reflect on my experience, demonstrating that not everything in this world is so horrible.
CLASS DISCUSSIONS & FOCUS SKILLS
(elements that I liked learning about this unit)
The values and beliefs inherited from religious upbringing shape a person's perceptions and choices, impacting their behavior and interactions with others.
A stereotype is a fixed general image or set of characteristics that a lot of people believe represent a particular type of person or thing.
OVERALL UNIT REFLECTION
This was one of my favourite units ever. One of the reasons is that the unit allows me to express myself and demonstrate my emotions through experiences, which falls within the unit essay and unit project. The essay was a terrific opportunity for me to not only learn how to communicate my feelings and describe what is going on around me, but it also allows me to reflect and advocate for what has happened in the past, allowing me to learn from my mistakes and strive for improvement. The zine project also allows me to express my emotions, but more significantly, it helps me understand myself, my components, and what I can contribute to today's society. Though the essay and project receive the most attention, class debates and focus skills that I learned in class also contribute significantly to my knowledge. Connecting with the important unit topic "What contributes to our identity" has been presented in teacher discussions, giving me a greater understanding of the people around me and their opinions, what defines a person's identity, and even abilities I could utilize in literature and reading. These qualities help me throughout my learning experiences and form my identity.
