Unit 1 Essential Question: What factors contributed to the rise and fall of the Roman Empire?
Reflection on UNIT 1 Test
In complete honesty, I would definitely say that I didn’t do well on this test. For this specific test - as my first ever Social Science test, I wanted it to go well and serve as a good starting point for this year. Therefore, I tried my best to review for this unit and had a mindset where I’d be able to get a high score. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to reach my expectations, whereas I got quite a low score in my opinion. Maybe I didn’t review enough or I probably crammed all my notes and worksheets in the matter of one day of reviewing but I will certainly take not only this test, but the whole unit as a way for me to reflect on my way of learning and how I will improve in the future exams. To improve this score of mine, without a doubt, I should try to make more time for this subject and give a shot at reviewing maybe a week before the test; especially in a school where students get many assignments and exams, time management would be essential. Other than that, I should ask my peers and classmates to help me with certain topics since some of the so-called facts I learnt from my notes weren’t that accurate. Lastly, I should consider reviewing vocabulary words and history more within flashcards. I've tried flashcards before and I feel like it would work perfectly for this subject.
Some Interesting Topics I have learnt in this Unit
The Battle of Canae was victorious; showcasing Hannibal's smart mind and how he was able to devise plans, strategies to conquer Canae. Because of this, he is now regarded as skilled by people only at the age of 26, whereas he set plans with his army. Though the Hannibal's army was outnumbered, he tricked the enemies into his trap and successfully won; especially in poor weather, Hannibal is truly a genius. Other than that, his elephants that were involved in the fight payed a vital role - where they attacked ruthlessy against the enemies. These elephants were fed alchohal which caused them to be more aggresive, and being considered as their "terror weapon". Though these elephants had some flaws which resulted in some attacks in their own army, they payed an important role in this battle.
I found the daily life of patrician people in Ancient Rine were vastly different from the people in the present. Females and males were treated differently from each other, even when it came to their names and hobbies. For example, men were forced to marry younger girls by force; and that they had to work for their family. While males worked, their wives stay at home making togas or simply doing house chores. Women were typically looked down on and being completed seperated from men. In conclusion, their cultues, laws and ways of thinking are very different to what we have now.
PAX Romana refers to "Roman Peace" where this time period in Ancient Rome (27 B.C.E - 180 B.C.E), showed the most peaceful time. It showed economic prosperity - showcasing aspects such as the country's daily life, literature & entertainment, recreations, ect. I truly loved this topic because it contributed a significant part to Ancient Rome and it even influenced our present life today. Many of the aspects in PAX Romana relates to what we have now and influenced people's thoughts and actions on these things. In summary, Ancient Romans pioneered advances in many areas of science and technology, establishing tools and methods that have ultimately shaped the way the world does certain things.
