UNIT 4 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: WHY IS THE ENVIRONMENT VALUABLE?
UNIT 4 NOVEL
Tamaya and Marshall cut through the restricted forests behind their school to avoid a bully—but they come across an unusual mud that has the ability to destroy practically all life on Earth. Sachar uses Fuzzy Mud to call attention to the problem of humanity's rapidly increasing population and its negative impact on the environment.
ARTIFACTS - ESSAY & PROJECT
I was assigned to pick a topic and write a persuasive essay discussing the key points of one side of that topic. I chose the topic "Impact of GMOs on Biodiversity: Progress or Danger?" - to talk about the dangers (cons) about GMOs, persuading people to take action and understand the problems of GMOs.
Essay Reflection
Overall, this essay was a fantastic experience for me. Despite the fact that I dislike writing academic essays, especially on topics I am unfamiliar with, I found it enjoyable and interesting. This essay provided an excellent opportunity for me to hone my research skills while also learning a new skill: adding citations and citing the information and websites I used for the important arguments in this article. Because I knew nothing about this topic or what GMOs were, it took me a long time to research and eventually understand the important details. Compared to all of the other essays I've written, I put more effort into this one because I wanted to understand more about the subject - specifically, GMOs in the food I eat. This article provided an excellent opportunity for me to improve my academic writing, research skills, and general knowledge of food.
Create an informative 8-12 slides presentation talking about the same topic from your essay (GMO on Biodiversity: Progess or Danger?). Explaining the two sides of the topic with examples, evidence and reasoning.
Project Reflection
After this presentation, I realized that presentations are in fact, really hard to perfect. As I did this presentation, I realized that my delivery was not so good - I realized that I felt nervous most of the time and I was quite scared to speak. Therefore, that gave me a 2 points deduction for reading off the board too much and not making eye contact with the audience. Therefore, I learnt that I should be more prepared and and practice more - especially when it comes to presentations. On the other side, this project also let me realize that my organizations skills are quite well and I have the ability to satisfy my teacher's expections, that the information on my slide matches the topic I chose, the evidence was specific, and the reasoning matches my claims and evidence. This presentation was a great way for me to reflect on my presentation skills and furthermore get motivation to try better in the future.
CLASS DISCUSSIONS & FOCUS SKILLS
(elements that I liked learning this unit)
We must have food, water, air, and shelter to survive.
The beauty of nature lies in its freshness, openness, slow breeze and the warm sun – relief for our brains.
OVERALL REFLECTION
Overall Reflection
As I looked over this unit, I realized how much it had helped me. Despite the fact that it was a short unit, I definitely learned a lot that will come in handy later in life. For example, this lesson focused on our environment and how it benefits us in terms of important resources, beautiful nature, and sustainability. These class discussions will help me better grasp how important biodiversity is to me, particularly the environment. Aside from that, the assignment and essay were quite beneficial to me, as they helped me gain a deeper grasp of my GMO topic. It improved my awareness of GMOs' impact on biodiversity and allowed me to advocate for better practice and preparation in presentations. Furthermore, the focus skills that I practiced in class were really valuable because they taught me new abilities like citing research and writing persuasive essays, as well as helping me learn more about characters and situations. In conclusion, this unit was one of the most beneficial units ever, and I will undoubtedly apply the material I learned in this unit in real life, hopefully improving all of the abilities I learned in his unit.
