COMPONENTS
An atom is a particle of matter that uniquely defines a chemical element. An atom consists of a central nucleus that is surrounded by one or more negatively charged electrons. The nucleus is positively charged and contains one or more relatively heavy particles known as protons and neutrons.
The number of protons in a nucleus is called the atomic number and always equals the number of electrons in orbit about that nucleus
The mass number is defined as the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Electron
The electron is a subatomic particle that is found in all atoms. Unlike protons, neutrons, or the nuclei of atoms, electrons are elementary particles.
Nucleus
Atomic nuclei consist of electrically positive protons and electrically neutral neutrons.
Proton
The proton is a subatomic particle with a positive electrical charge. They are found in every atomic nucleus of every element.
Neutron
Neutrons are the particles in an atom that have a neutral charge.
