UNIT 3 ESSENTIAL QUESTION: WHAT MAKES A FAIR SOCIETY?
UNIT 3 NOVEL
In what was once North America, the Capitol of Panem maintains its hold on its 12 districts by compelling each to select a boy and a girl, known as Tributes, to compete in the Hunger Games, a nationally broadcast event that serves as entertainment for The Capitol. Every person must witness the youths fighting to the death until only one remains. Katniss Everdeen, a District 12 tribute, has nothing to rely on in an arena where she must measure survival against sacrifice and love.
ARTIFACTS - ESSAY & PROJECT
For this project, me and my team's job was to create a podcast (4-5mins) about an activist, which where my team chose Mahatma Gandhi. This podcast's purpose were for a person to fake as an activist while the other person interviews them.

Podcast Reflection
For this Unit, I was given the opportunity to conduct research on an activist who has made a difference in society by being involved in social inequity or justice. I wanted to focus on the events in their lives that made them into the people they are today, and how much they have contributed to this society. I learned a lot about the history of the struggle against social inequality and how it has influenced social transformation, people. Following this episode, I discovered how difficult it is to work in a group, especially when your teammates don't cooperate or try. But, after all, I did my best to use my leadership skills to guide my group through the assignment. It was enjoyable to try out a short podcast because I had previously only been assigned to write essays or give presentations; it feels nice to try something new. Though I ended up with a score that didnt satisfy me, it was nice to try a new experience.
For this essay, I was assigned to write an essay breaking down 2 traits about Katniss. After reading the novel, I have to use my knowledge based on the book to talk about Katniss, using evidence from the book with reasoning.

Characterization Essay Reflection
This essay was a difficult assignment; I had to overcome each barrier in order to accomplish it. Because this was my first time writing a characterization essay, particularly on a novel, I had no expertise, it also required lots of effort and assistance from others. Because I had to write about a character from a novel, I had to sort through dozens of pages and annotations to find the right qualities and proof for each trait. Throughout the process of writing my essay, I sought my teacher for assistance, particularly with proofreading paragraphs. Overall, it was a pleasant experience to try something new; despite the difficulty, I received a high score and am pleased of myself for pushing through the penalties.
CLASS DISCUSSIONS & FOCUS SKILLS
(elements that I liked learning this unit)
Activism refers to the efforts and acts performed to address social, political, economic, environmental, and cultural concerns.
Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.
OVERALL REFLECTION
Overall, this unit was decent. I was able to learn a variety of new subjects that greatly enhanced my overall understanding. First and foremost, the novel that I was assigned to read this unit, The Hunger Games, was probably one of the best novels I've read in my school years; I'd been dying to read it, but instead I got to read it in class! Aside from that, I like the characterization essay since it allowed me to have a deeper knowledge of the protagonist, Katniss, and it also taught me a new skill: writing a characterization essay. Now I know how to use material from novels in an actual essay. The interview project was also really beneficial; although it was difficult to work in groups, the project allowed me to apply my leadership skills to guide my teammates and myself to success! Furthermore, the class discussions and skills I learned in class were enjoyable; I particularly enjoyed the lessons in which Ms. Ciara explained our society to the class; I also found the skills I learned to be very useful in my learning; they definitely made it easier, especially when I used plot mountains to plan out my essays/events in a story and symbolism to understand a story's moral.
