February proved to be a dynamic and enriching month for Alt Ed, marked by the launch of innovative programs, student achievements, and community engagement. From hands-on learning experiences to vital community support, the month highlighted the dedication to providing diverse and impactful educational opportunities.
Community and Support:
The month kicked off with a focus on community and support. MGM launched its first "Kick-Out" to celebrate student success and boost attendance, a testament to the proactive approach to addressing student needs. Vital resources were also provided to staff and families regarding ICE procedures, ensuring everyone felt informed and supported. Additionally, the academic achievements of staff members, Natalie Balderas and Manny Rodriguez, were celebrated, inspiring students and colleagues alike.
Hands-on Learning Experiences:
Hands-on learning took center stage throughout February. Students engaged in a wide array of practical experiences, from exploring MGM’s revitalized garden, learning about food security and sustainability, to mastering horsemanship at Rawhide Ranch. Kathy Mitchell’s students experienced equine therapy at Reins Therapeutic Riding Center, providing a unique and impactful learning opportunity. The highly anticipated welding program at RBV officially launched, opening doors for students interested in skilled trades. Furthermore, students showcased their entrepreneurial skills at the Makers & Merchants Market, selling custom creations and gaining invaluable business experience. The reading program at Hannalei Elementary, headed by Maria Blake, was launched to provide our students with mentorship opportunities.
Community Engagement and Student Leadership:
February also saw a strong emphasis on community engagement and student leadership. Alta Vista hosted a warm and welcoming "Coffee with the Principal" event, complete with a Valentine’s Day theme, food and clothing distribution, and community connection. Students participated in the Superintendent’s Council on Innovative Learning, providing their perspectives on educational initiatives. MGM and Alta held Advisory Rep Council meetings, ensuring student voices were heard. The Community Engagement Initiative grant facilitated in-person trips to Ontario, CA, fostering collaboration between staff, parents, and students.
Student Achievements:
Students' achievements were celebrated throughout the month. Alta’s Student Exhibitions showcased student growth and perseverance, while the boys’ basketball team finished their season strong, reaching the third game of their tournament. MGM’s Gael Garcia was honored at the Rising Star Ceremony, recognizing his significant growth and achievements. The importance of access, equity, and representation was highlighted during Black History Month, with a call to integrate Black leaders and contributions into the curriculum.
Throughout the month, the Alt Ed community demonstrated a commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment, empowering students to achieve their full potential.
Hello and welcome back to our monthly newsletter for MGM and AVHS! February was filled with hands-on learning, student leadership, and community connection across our sites. Alta wrapped up its final round of student exhibitions, where students shared their challenges, successes, and learning journeys. These exhibitions highlight student growth in ways that traditional assessments can’t capture—congratulations to all who participated!
Students also gained real-world experience through exciting new opportunities. Welding, a highly sought-after program, launched at Rancho Buena Vista High School, giving students hands-on technical training. Meanwhile, the Makers and Merchants Market allowed students to test their entrepreneurial skills, successfully selling handmade goods while showcasing their creative talents. Over at Rawhide Ranch, a group of students and staff took part in an immersive overnight trip, caring for and riding horses while learning valuable lessons in responsibility and teamwork.
MGM and Alta’s basketball team wrapped up a hard-fought season, making it to the third game of their tournament before being eliminated. A huge thank you to our coaches for providing this outlet for our students! On campus, MGM introduced Kick-Out, an innovative attendance intervention strategy, while Alta celebrated community with a Valentine’s Day BBQ that included a clothing and food distribution.
We also took time to recognize student leadership and achievement. MGM’s Gael Garcia was honored at the Rising Star Senior of the Month ceremony for his dedication and growth. Meanwhile, a team of Alternative Education students, staff, and parents traveled to Ontario, CA, for the Community Engagement Initiative grant, working together to ensure student voices help shape the future of our schools.

As we close out Black History Month, we reflect on the importance of ensuring every student has access to meaningful, real-world learning experiences. As James Baldwin reminds us, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced."
Here’s to another month of learning, growth, and opportunity!
