October has been a whirlwind of activity at Alta Vista and MGM, filled with exciting events, academic achievements, and strong community bonds.
One of the highlights of the month was the highly anticipated Fall Festival at Alta Vista. Organized by Megan Bishop and her dedicated team, the event was a resounding success, drawing families from across the community. Children delighted in trick-or-treating, while students proudly showcased their skills at various booths. The festival was a testament to the strong sense of community at Alta Vista.
Another significant event was the visit of the Vista Community Clinic mobile medical van. This initiative, spearheaded by Bekka Kinder, Danielle McKeever, and their team, provided essential healthcare services to students and community members alike. By offering timely care, the clinic demonstrated its commitment to improving the well-being of the community.
The annual Vista Art Walk showcased the incredible talent of MGM and Alta Vista students. Thank you to Lydia Trujillo and the students who took some time to represent both sites.
On the athletic front, the boys' soccer team continued their winning streak with a victory against Ivy. The team's dedication and hard work, under the guidance of coaches Russell Gottemann, David Henry, and Cleveland Hagans, have propelled them to success. Additionally, Sati Aviles's Game Room students made a name for themselves by winning an e-sports tournament at Montecito. This achievement highlights the importance of providing students with opportunities to explore their passions and develop valuable skills.
In the classroom, David Ayres joined the Alta Vista faculty as a new English teacher, bringing a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. His addition to the team is sure to enhance the learning experience for students.
The district's commitment to innovative learning is evident in the Superintendent's Council for Innovative Learning, where student representatives from both sites had the opportunity to share their perspectives and contribute to the district's vision.
As the first trimester draws to a close, both Alta Vista and MGM have been buzzing with activity. From pumpkin painting and tea parties to soccer matches and academic competitions, there has been something for everyone. The schools' commitment to providing a well-rounded education is evident in the diverse range of opportunities offered to students.
One of the key initiatives at both schools is the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE). This program empowers parents with the knowledge and tools to support their children's academic and social-emotional development. By fostering strong partnerships between home and school, PIQE aims to create a positive learning environment for all students.
The UCSD ropes course has also been a valuable experience for students, promoting teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. By challenging themselves in a safe and supportive environment, students are able to develop essential life skills.
By fostering a strong sense of community, prioritizing academic excellence, and providing diverse opportunities for student growth, Alta Vista and MGM are setting the stage for a bright future for all.
Welcome to the Community School Communicator: the monthly newsletter for Murray High School and Alta Vista High School, the two community continuation schools in Vista Unified School District!
We've kicked off the school year in 2024-25 with some great Back to School Nights, a wide array of student Leave to Learn activities, and will start our monthly Community School Advisory Committee (CSAC) Meetings soon. Join us! We need the voices of our students, families, and community members to inform us of how we can best meet the needs of all of those groups. Deciding on direction, goals, and how to spend tens of thousands of dollars in resources is on the agenda for our first CSAC meetings of the year, which are on Tuesday, November 5 at Alta and Thursday, November 7 at MGM at 4:30. Tuesdays at Alta and Thursdays at Murray are also home to our popular PM Program: an evening from 4-7pm every week where VUSD students can come to earn missing credits, as well as take part in various other programs and services, from group counseling with Project Aware, Steel Drum lessons from Kainga Music, to mobile dental and wellness services from Vista Community Clinic--all at no cost! Check in with our Community School Counselor, Lydia Contreras or call our office at 760-631-2502 to learn more about which services will be available when you plan to attend.
