March 2025 was a dynamic month for VUSD's Alternative Education programs, filled with student achievements, staff collaboration, and community engagement. The month began with the celebration of Manny Rodriguez as a VUSD Star, recognized for his outstanding contributions, and four MGM students secured valuable internships at local San Diego restaurants, providing hands-on career exploration. Students also embarked on an enriching trip to Coastal Roots Farm, learning about sustainable agriculture and food justice.
The month was marked by several critical administrative tasks. ELPAC testing commenced at MGM, and staff were encouraged to participate in the PBIS and LCAP surveys, influencing district policies and funding. L2L protocols were reinforced for off-campus student activities, ensuring safety and accountability. The month also celebrated Rising Star Senior Awards, recognizing Chris Elena from Alta and Collin Anderson from VVA.
The second week continued with successful events, including a well-attended "Coffee with the Counselor" session. Fatima Sacarias delivered a compelling report to the school board, and CSAC meetings fostered productive discussions. Chris Elena, the March Rising Star Senior, shared his entrepreneurial goals. Students also engaged in a fishing trip off the Oceanside Pier and progressed in their Learning Through Internship (LTI) pipeline, with check-ins at Garden31 internships and ESS preschool interviews.
The third week focused on parent engagement and professional development. Alta and MGM hosted successful "Coffee with the Counselor" events, discussing student progress. Lydia Contreras led Guidance Team Meetings and facilitated the second Big Picture Book Club session, focusing on educational reform. A team of staff members presented at the ACSA Conference in Berkeley, sharing insights on building successful community schools. Four new student interns at MGM began their restaurant internships. Students in the Bobier Reading Program began earning hourly pay through the Workability Grant. Staff were reminded to complete the Guidance Guild Google Form and participate in the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS). Students also attended an opera performance of Salome, and the VCC Mobile Medical Unit provided healthcare support at MGM. Students also had a booth at the Vista Farmers Market.
The final week of March saw the launch of the Healthy Relationships Student Lunch Group at MGM, teaching students crucial interpersonal skills. Students also participated in the Vista Farmers Market, learning about food security and sustainable agriculture. A group of students visited MiraCosta College and a local print shop, exploring career pathways. Superintendent Dr. Matt Doyle visited MGM's collab meeting, expressing support for the school's real-world learning initiatives. Students also attended an opera performance of Salome. The VUSD STEM2Career Expo was announced, and the Superintendent's Council for Equity and Anti-Racism prepared to meet. The week concluded with the first football game of the season.
Throughout the month, there was a strong emphasis on student empowerment, community collaboration, and professional development. The focus on real-world learning experiences, such as internships and community projects, provided students with valuable skills and opportunities. Staff engagement and collaboration were also highlighted, with numerous meetings, workshops, and presentations. The month concluded with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for the upcoming spring break.

Hello families and students,
March was a month full of connection, exploration, and celebration across our three alternative education sites — Alta Vista High School, Major General Murray High School, and Vista Visions Academy. From college visits to farmers markets, opera trips to internship placements, our students were out in the world and doing incredible things. Here’s a peek at the highlights:
🎓 Spotlight on Student Success
Several students from MGM landed exciting new internships at local restaurants in San Diego, kicking off hands-on experiences in professional kitchens. We’re so proud of their work and the staff who support them!
Our rising star seniors for March — Collin Anderson (VVA) and Chris Elena (AVHS) — were honored for their inspiring stories of persistence and future entrepreneurial plans.
Students from our schools had the opportunity to table at the Vista Farmers Market thanks to a partnership with Garden31, helping promote food security while learning how to grow and share their own produce.
Another group visited MiraCosta College for a campus tour led by staff and teachers, giving students a hands-on look at their post-secondary options.
A team of students from Alta and Murray attended the opera Salome — for many, their first live opera experience. A big thank you to our chaperones and staff for helping expand students’ cultural horizons!
🎉 Celebrations & Events
Our Student Board Representative, Fatima Sacarias, delivered her monthly update at the VUSD Board meeting with poise and power — go, Fatima!
Our counseling team held Coffee with the Counselor events at both Alta and MGM, offering parents and caregivers a chance to check in on their students’ progress and connect with our staff. These were incredibly well attended — thank you for showing up and partnering with us!
At Alta, families also enjoyed a warm welcome from staff at a morning drive-through event with donuts and lattes, led by community liaison Xochi Tejeda Robles — just one of the many ways we’re strengthening school-home connection. At MGM, our community liaison Susana Valenzuela, has organized a series of workshops; be sure to check your messages from MGM on ParentSquare for more info on these opportunities!
🧠 Enrichment & Support
Our first Healthy Relationships Lunch Group launched at MGM, supporting students in learning about boundaries, communication, and self-respect in romantic and interpersonal relationships — a vital part of adolescent growth.
The STEM2Career Expo was a huge hit! Our Math Support teacher, Lisa Cafro, captivated visitors at this districtwide event with a math-based zombie activity that had both students and adults hooked (no brains were eaten in the making of this learning experience).
We continued our Big Picture Book Club, led by our fantastic Community School Counselor, Lydia Contreras, where staff reflect on how education systems can evolve to better serve every student.
📅 Looking Ahead
April brings our final stretch of the school year — with just about nine weeks remaining! We’re entering this season strong, and we appreciate your continued support, encouragement, and partnership as we help our students finish the year with confidence and pride.
