As the 2024-2025 school year drew to a close and May transitioned into June, the Alternative Education (Alt Ed) program was abuzz with a mix of celebratory events, academic milestones, and preparations for the upcoming year.
May was packed with enriching experiences for students. A highlight was the Chicano Park trip combined with a Patriot Jet Boat ride, offering a blend of cultural immersion and exhilarating fun. Students explored the vibrant murals and rich history of Chicano Park, a powerful symbol of cultural pride. Earlier in May, students participated in "Doc 4 a Day" at UCSD, an immersive medical school experience that exposed them to health careers through simulated surgeries and discussions with physicians.
Financial literacy was a key focus, with Alta hosting the Bite of Reality program, a hands-on budgeting simulation. MGM’s Exhibitions showcased student growth and learning, while the Welding Program celebrated its students' commitment to skilled trades. The annual Murray Olympics provided a fun, competitive outlet for students.
Beyond academics, students engaged in various "Leave-to-Learns," including visits to MiraCosta College and Iron Mongers Gym for hands-on fitness experiences. The inaugural Grad Nite at San Diego FC's Snapdragon Stadium was a resounding success, offering seniors a joyful evening of celebration.
The Alt Ed team saw significant staffing changes as the school year concluded. Heather Andrews and Megan Bishop will join VVA in PE and ELA roles, respectively. Gigi (Darlene) Marcus returns to Alt Ed as MGM PE. Robert Woods will take over the History/Social Studies position at MGM, and Melanie Pagayonan will step into the Health/Attendance role at MGM.
Community Engagement and Program Development
Community partnerships continued to be a cornerstone of Alt Ed's success. MGM hosted the Community School Coalition, celebrating collaborations with organizations like Heavy Breathing Foundation, Kainga Music, and Garden31. The Mentor Banquet at MGM honored partners who provided invaluable internship experiences for students.
The district-wide UCSD Better Together Survey was administered to staff, students, and parents to gather feedback on the program's vision and values.
As the school year officially wrapped up, preparations for summer school and the 2025-2026 academic year were well underway. Summer school began in early June, with a final push for enrollment. Certificated staff are scheduled to return for PD Days on August 7-8, 2025, followed by prep days.
The Alt Ed community reflected on a year defined by dedication and a steadfast belief in public education driven by purpose and heart. The commitment to improving teaching and learning conditions for both staff and students remains a top priority for the year to come.

Here are just a few highlights from the past month:
🚀 Real-World Learning in Action
At Murray High School, students embraced opportunities to extend their learning beyond the classroom.
Our seniors proudly showcased their personal and academic journeys during Big Picture exhibitions, sharing reflections and real-world skills they’ve developed.
Students took part in a powerful field trip to Chicano Park, learning firsthand about the rich history and activism that shaped this vibrant community landmark.
We closed the month with Career Day, where students connected with professionals from a range of industries, gaining insights and inspiration for their futures.
Meanwhile, over at Alta Vista High School, students immersed themselves in important life skills and real-world learning:
Bite of Reality, a hands-on budgeting simulation hosted on campus, gave students a glimpse into managing finances and making adult decisions — a crucial life skill as they prepare for life after high school.
Our students also attended Leave-to-Learn trips, including a visit to the Vista Farmers Market, and had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Doc 4 A Day program at UCSD, experiencing what it’s like to walk in the shoes of a medical professional for a day.
