A preserve spell enables the caster to retain some item fresh and whole until some later time when it is needed in a spell.
Of course, the dweomer is ineffective in retaining the potency of material such as mistletoe, holly berries, and similar stuffs which must be gathered periodically. It is likewise ineffective in preserving the deceased for later resurrection. It is otherwise effectual.
The sort of material which can be treated by a preserve spell depends upon the level of the caster:
Hard, relatively dry material:
Soft, relatively wet material:
Semi-liquid and liquid materials:
2nd-4th level
5th-7th level
8th level & up
A container is necessary only in cases where a relatively high degree of moisture is concerned.
The material components of the spell are a pinch of dust, a bit of resin (or amber), and a drop of brandy.
