Caprese Salad is a simple and elegant dish that showcases the beauty of fresh ingredients with its vibrant flavors of tomato, mozzarella, and basil.
Ingredients:
4 ripe tomatoes (preferably heirloom or Roma)
1 lb (450g) fresh mozzarella cheese
1 cup fresh basil leaves
3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp balsamic vinegar (optional)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
Method:
Prepare the Tomatoes:
Slice the tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. If using different types of tomatoes, alternate them for color variation.
Prepare the Mozzarella:
Slice the fresh mozzarella into similarly sized rounds, about 1/4 inch thick.
Assemble the Salad:
On a large serving platter or plate, alternate layers of tomato and mozzarella slices in a circular or overlapping pattern.
Tuck fresh basil leaves between the tomato and mozzarella layers or scatter them on top.
Drizzle with Olive Oil:
Generously drizzle the extra virgin olive oil over the salad.
Add Balsamic Vinegar (Optional):
For an added tangy sweetness, drizzle balsamic vinegar lightly over the salad (optional).
Season:
Sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
