Marie entire life is entwined in a web of criminal activity. As a brothel owner, Marie exploited vulnerable people (such as Allie Novak and Kellie Chia), manipulating them into working for her. Her manipulative tendencies are seen frequently, using her cunning to manipulate situations and people to her advantage. She is willing to do just about anything, and let just about anyone, children included, be hurt, in order for her to gain power, control, influence, or money.
Danny, her son, was severely injured after a night out. In hospital, a doctor diagnosed Danny as brain-dead and recommended discontinuing his life support. Marie landed herself in prison due to her reaction, violently assaulting the doctor. Danny eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Marie's primary drive throughout her time in Wentworth is finding her son's killer.
Her secondary focus is getting out of prison — by any means. This eventually leads a siege, orchestrated with the help of a corrupt prison guard. She doesn't escape; the siege ends in violence, with a number of deaths and Marie getting shot in the leg.
