Ray was brought up by his father, a former marine, and mother, an optician. Growing up, his father taught him self-defence, styled by both his military training and aspects of martial arts. Ray began competitive kickboxing at a young age, and into his adulthood continues to practice various combat styles.As a youth worker, Ray's seen first had the impact that drugs and organised crime can have on a community. For many years he hoped that through this work alone he would be able to make at least a small difference. His approach to supporting his community changed, however, after a first-hand experience with one of the more violet gangs in the city.While closing up the community centre one night, two men invaded the building, in search of one of the two boys he was with. Ultimately, Ray was able to fight them off, but not before one of the boys was seriously injured.The event saw Ray increasingly frustrated by the lack of action on the part of the police in doing anything about it (or much else of the crime in the area). He compiled an extensive file on what he knew of the members and organisation of the gang — identifying not only the attackers from that night but also a number of their other key members — but even when presented with it, law enforcement took little action.Frustrated and disillusioned, Ray opted to take a more active role in protecting the kids he worked with. What began as a plan simply to keep a watch over those who were most at risk during times of heightened tensions between rivalling gangs, ended up turning into much more. His nights were increasing spent trying both to track down evidence against the the highest ranking members of the city's criminal elements and to hinder their activities. As a result of this, he's inadvertently taken up the mantle of enacting vigilante protection in the city — principally aiming to lessen the reach of gangs in the area, but unable to step in when other violent crimes are committed.
