Genesis 1:1-8
God Said Let There Be Light out of the Darkness
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
Genesis 1:14-19
God Creates the Sun and the Moon and the Stars on Day Four
14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
Isaiah 9:1-2
To Us a Child is Born
1 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan—
2 The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.
John 8:12
Jesus is the Light
12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
John 9:5
Jesus is the Light
5 "While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
John 1:1-13
Jesus is the Light
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
John 3:19
Jesus is the Light
19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.
John 12:35-46
Jesus is the Light
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
“Lord, who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and deadened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.
44 Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
There are many great mysteries in the Bible...One is about creation...On the first day of creation and the fourth day of creation look similar, but there is different ways that people interpret these verses...And it seems we are given night on day one...And then on day two we see that God gives us evening and morning on day two (after we have the night)...Some believe that the word day is a twenty four hour period all the way through the first chapter of Genesis...Others believe that the sun and moon are needed to be created before we can have a day of twenty four hours, so they believe that the real day of twenty four hours begins on day four, when the sun and the moon and the stars were created, and after the evening and morning were completed...And still there are others who believe that Genesis and many parts of the Bible are true, yet symbolic...
So let us review these verses in Genesis of day one, day two, and day four...
In the beginning, when God created the heavens and earth, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters...And then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light...God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness...And this was Day One...
And God does not say what this Light is on day one...But we know that this Light is Good...And this Light separates itself from the darkness of things...
Then on day two, God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” ...So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it...And it was so...God called the vault “sky.”...And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day...
Then God would creates the Sun and the Moon and the Stars on Day Four...And God said on Day Four, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.”...And it was so...God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night...He also made the stars...God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness...And God saw that it was good...And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day...
To add to these comments about the Light in day one, John in his gospel tells us that Jesus was with God in the beginning...So since we know that Jesus was with God from the beginning and that He is the Light of all mankind, could He be the Light that happened on day one?...In the beginning, we know that the Word was with God, and the Word was God...So Jesus was with God in the beginning...Through Jesus all things were created; without Him nothing was made that has been made...In Him is life, and that life is the Light of men...The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never overcome it...And Jesus lets us know that He is the Light of mankind, in other verses...Jesus teaches us by saying, "I AM the Light of the world...Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life."...As Jesus' Disciple St. John further writes, one day Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in Me, he does not believe in Me only, but in the One who sent Me...When he looks at Me, he sees the One who sent Me...I have come into the world as a Light, so that no one who believes in Me should stay in darkness...And this is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of the Light because their deeds were evil...Jesus drives out the darkness with His Light, much like on the first day of the world, when God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light...God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness...
So did God make the twenty four hour day on day one, or did He wait and make the twenty four hour day on day four?...What was this first Light or light on day one?...And does it matter?...It actually matters much to those who believe that the earth is millions of years old...This gives those believers credibility and belief that if the sun and the moon and the stars are necessary for a twenty four hour day, so their interpretation changes or is seen differently if there is a long period of days one, two, and three...They now can say with some further belief that the first three days are much longer than the regular twenty four hours and can better reconcile the old earth idea with science...But we are not told if day four is actually the beginning of the twenty four hour day, and that the sun and moon are God's stamp and His seal for the very first twenty four hour day...
We do know that God had Moses write and inspire him to put these great words down about creation in this way...
