Matthew 16:1-4
Demand for a Sign
1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.
John 3:1-2
1 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
John 5:17-18
Our Father and His Son are Working
17 Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.” 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
Romans 1:20-21
God's Invisible Qualities
20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
I would not mind to see a personal miracle from Jesus...We know He can do them...I have ask for a miracle from God before...So when the Pharisees ask for a sign, it does not seem like an extraordinary thing to ask for...Yet, Jesus did not want to and does not want to just to go around and do miracle after miracle...That was and is not what He did when He was on earth, and it seems that is not in His attributes or His style to do them now...
Maybe the Father and Him are doing signs and miracles every second of everyday, and we just cannot see them or understand them...Maybe God has invisible qualities that we just cannot see and understand...Maybe since He is working everyday, the miracles are happening all around us and we do not see them or just take them for granted...Maybe the sunrise, the sunset, the sun itself, the moon, the sky, the air, the oceans are all miracles we take for granted as we age...The first time we saw a sunset, or dawn, or the first time we saw the moon or the ocean it has an awe about it, but then all these things of nature that God created shows of His glory...And it is not that God is not working and keeping the universe and earth finely tuned for mankind, but it is maybe we take these things for granted and our child-like thinking becomes somewhat clouded as we age...
The Pharisees wanted a miracle to have Jesus prove that He was the Messiah...They were testing Jesus...God does not need to be tested...God does not want a test, He wants us to have faith...And who are we to test God?...
Jesus doing another miracle does not mean God exists or does not exists...God exists, because there is a God...The Pharisees that followed Jesus closely would have a great advantage and would have seen miracle after miracle...The Pharisees had an agenda that opposed Jesus...Let us not oppose Him...And although we do not have the advantage to follow Him around physically, we can read the four gospels and read where He did many miracles of different types...He did healing miracles...He did miracles of nature, like calming a raging storm and turning water into wine...He walked on water, just to name a few of His different types of miracles...But although the Pharisees got to see these miracles, and at the very least, heard first hand accounts of them, they did not believe He is the Messiah...
Let us not be Pharisaic in our faith...There is a difference in seeing a miracle and having faith...And even though we want to link miracles with faith, a miracle is different from our faith...And I think Jesus wants us to realize this difference and not want us to ask for repeated miracles, but to ask (and this is only my opinion) for a stronger faith, and to keep the faith that we have...The Sign of Jonah, the miracle of His resurrection was the sign He said He would give the Pharisees...He resurrected from death on a cross, and walked the earth for forty days (Acts 1:3)...Did the Pharisees after seeing Him raise from the dead believe now?...After you read the gospels and how He resurrected from death, do you believe?...That is the faith question we need to answer for ourselves, and not another miracle...
