John 13:34-35
Love One Another
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 14:6-7
Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and is Life
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
John 16:13
The Holy Spirit
13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Morality can be defined as principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior...Morality is a particular system of values and principles of conduct, especially one held by a specified person, a group of people or a society...Morality is our personal ethics...Good Morality and Good Ethics comes from God...God intends us and wants us to have good morality and behave in a good way...God really does want us to be good rather than evil...So we need to know about good morals and what they are...And we also need to know where our good morals will lead us and where our bad morals lead us...And we should reflect on our good and bad behavior...
So let us say that you believe in God...And let us say that you believe that God is the One where morality comes from...And life is where our morality plays out...And God is watching over everyone's lives and guiding us all with the Holy Spirit in trying to lead us to the Kingdom of Heaven (or to His Kingdom, the Kingdom of God) as we journey through life...God is giving us direction, and He is leading His followers and believers (all together during their lifetimes) down a path, a road, this lifetime earthly trip to His Kingdom..
God wants us to love one another...When we love our neighbor, we are kind and gentle and courteous to them...When we treat others this way, then others will know that we are Disciples of Jesus...And by loving one another, we are in tune with our neighbors and their feelings...So, if we can stay on board with our Grand Conductor and follow His Way in life, the Way, during our lives, we will love our neighbors...We will treat them as we want to be treated...And we will discover Truth along the Way...We cannot love our neighbor without being kind to them...So for mankind to do this, all of humanity needs to be going in the same direction and playing the same tune, and we will arrive at the same place (so to speak)...So we throughout our lives as we try to go in this heaven made direction, our goal is to arrive at the Kingdom of God, and finally to His heavenly home...
C. S. Lewis writes about morality and this subject in his book, Mere Christianity...He describes that there are two ways in which “the human machine” goes wrong...One is when human individuals drift apart from one another and do not love one another, or else collide with one another and do one another damage to others, by cheating or bullying our neighbor or neighbors...The other is when things go wrong on the inside of the individual—when the different parts of him (his different faculties, and his desires, and so on) either drift apart or interfere with one another...
Lewis writes that me might think of humanity as “a fleet of ships sailing in formation” and what makes it successful...The voyage will be a success only, in the first place, if the ships do not collide and get in one another’s way; and, secondly, if each ship is seaworthy and has her engines in good order...As a matter of fact, you cannot have either of these two things without the other...If the ships keep on having collisions, they will not remain seaworthy very long...On the other hand, if their steering of the ship's gears are out of order, they will not be able to avoid these collisions...There is a correct voyage...Life is the journey...And the destination is the Kingdom of God...The Great Captain of this fleet of ships wants us all to arrive at the Kingdom of God...That is where He is leading us and wants to take us...
Lewis then offers an alternative metaphor...Humanity is like a band playing a tune...To get a good result, he says, you need two things...Each player’s individual instrument must be in tune and also each must come in at the right moment, so as to combine with all the other instruments...These two elements are fairly obvious, but we often forget to identify the most important piece of information...We have not asked where the fleet is trying to get to, or what piece of music the band is trying to play...The instruments might be all in tune and might all come in at the right moment, but even so the performance would not be a success if they had been engaged to provide dance music and actually played nothing but Dead Marches...And no matter how well the fleet has sailed, its voyage would be a failure if it were meant to reach New York and actually arrived at Calcutta...This Grand Conductor has a plan on how things should be played and played out in life...There is this right way and a wrong way...There is good and there is evil...
Applying this to morality, Lewis says that ethics is concerned with three things: Firstly, with fair play and harmony between individuals...We must love one another...Secondly, with what might be called tidying up or harmonizing the things inside each individual...We need to learn the teachings of Jesus...Thirdly, with the general purpose of human life as a whole...What man was made for: What course the whole fleet ought to be on: what particular tune the Conductor of the Band wants it to play...We must learn to follow the Holy Spirit...
So God wants us to be righteous and just and in harmony with our neighbors, all our neighbors...He wants us to follow the teachings of Jesus and believe in Him and do what He did when He was on earth...And if we can follow the teachings of Jesus then we love each other (and all our neighbors) and we are then all His Disciples...We will be guided by the Holy Spirit to the Truth...We then are well on our way to finding the Truth, and the Way, and the Life and to getting into heaven through Him and being with God in His heavenly home...God is this Grand Conductor...God is the Great Captain of the Universe leading us to His Kingdom, each and every one of us...
