18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”
21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.
22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”
27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”
29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
John 14:15-17
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
Galatians 5:22-25
Fruit of the Holy Spirit
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
John 15:8
Jesus Tells His Disciples to Bear Much Fruit
8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
A certain ruler asked Jesus, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”...Jesus quickly addresses this point of good and goodness...Jesus asks the ruler, “Why do you call me good?”...Jesus does not deny that He is good, but He asks the ruler a question...And it seems Jesus does not give the ruler a chance to answer the question He asks...Instead He answers His own question about goodness...Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.’”...So Jesus asks and answers the question about good and goodness...Jesus teaches us that no one is good, except God alone...
There is this battle of good and evil in our world...The battle of the Light over a prince of darkness in our world...And God and Jesus are our Goodness...
Jesus brings up the question about what is good?...I think the question can also be ask this way, "If we have no God or one does not believe in God, then what is goodness?"...Can we have goodness without God?...The question makes us think where goodness must come from...No man even though he may have some goodness in him, is completely good...Only God is Absolutely and Perfectly Good...Without God all goodness breaks down...Without God, we would live in a world of evil, since no one is good except God alone...
Jesus taught us more about God than anyone, when He lived on earth...He teaches us how God is faithful, loving, forgiving, has mercy, and is just...Jesus teaches that God would send us the Holy Spirit, after He physically left the world...And the Holy Spirit would come and guide us to Him, to the Truth...And the Holy Spirit has certain characteristics...Since God has sent us the Holy Spirit, He has the Holy Spirit's special attributes or as St. Paul calls them fruit ...The fruit of the Holy Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control...Jesus tells it is His Father's glory that the Disciples bear much fruit and be lovable, joyous, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and be in self-control...
These are all characteristics of God...This fruit and Goodness are a part of God's nature...And God is LOVE...One can see that out of LOVE comes goodness...
