John 15:1-27
Jesus is Our True Vine and We Are His Branches
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
The World Hates the Disciples
18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21 They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. 24 If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’
The Work of the Holy Spirit
26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
Jesus uses the powerful teaching of the vine and the branches to illustrate the vital importance of our having a personal relationship with Him...He emphasizes that just as a branch cannot bear fruit apart from the vine, we cannot bear fruit in our Christian lives apart from Him...This underscores the profound Truth that true fulfillment and spiritual fruitfulness are not achieved through independence, but through a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus...We are called to remain in Him, to abide in His LOVE, and to allow His life to flow through us...This requires a conscious choice to surrender our own will and to follow His guidance...It demands a willingness to love one each of our neighbors, to serve others, and to live lives that reflect the character of Christ...
But humans want to be in control–we want to call our own shots, and make our own own decisions in life...Because it is our nature and the ways of this world to want independence...We want this independence, it seems especially when we are young and want to be on our own...So, it is our nature, coupled by our earthly desires that we look to be independent and try to control our lives...And God has given us a lot of freedom...But are we free, and are we a part of this Vine?...God wants us to love Him and love one another, and it seems especially when are younger we are all tempted to think that we can be in control of our lives...But we are not, God is in control...It might be by chasing our financial independence, trying to live like we want to live, and striving for self-sufficiency that leads us away and being free from our parents...We find friends and the ones we want to hang out with, so we can do our own thing...And by choosing our own friends and being around who we want to be hanging around with, we think we are more in control of our lives...
Jesus thinks differently...Jesus calls us to a life of radical dependence on God and Himself...Jesus challenges our thoughts of complete independence...We actually are a part of His Vine...He even tells us, in this metaphor, He is our Vine, and we are His branches...He says: "I AM the vine; you are the branches...If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing...If you do not remain in Me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned...If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you...This is to My Father’s Glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be My disciples....He also says He is the Good Shepherd, and we are His sheep."...He is the Bread and Water of life that we need to live and survive, yet through these things, we still think we are in control...We often do not realize that God is ultimately in control of all things...Especially when are feeling good and healthy, we feel like we are in charge...Following Jesus requires a conscious decision to break free from the world's influence and embrace a life of dependence on God...It means choosing to love God and others above self, even when it's difficult or unpopular...That is why He tells His followers that the world will hate His Disciples...Following Jesus necessitates going against the grain of societal norms and embracing a counter-cultural lifestyle...Yet, we or most of us as we age and see and go through the aging process, we can literally see the change in our lives and that God is Ultimately in control....He is the Author of our story...
The world has this desire for independence from God...The world values self-sufficiency, autonomy, and the pursuit of its own desires, which often conflict with the demands of following Jesus...This pursuit of this independence often leads to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and ultimately, a sense of emptiness, even though we are around those we want to be with...This makes us think there is something missing in life and connect us more to Jesus' teachings...It can make us seek God...Jesus challenges our pursuit of self-reliance...He calls us to a life of interdependence, where we rely on Him for our strength, guidance, and fulfillment...Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, knows His sheep intimately...He leads them to green pastures, provides for their needs, and protects them from harm...He is our Creator...He guides us with gentleness and compassion, always seeking our well-being...True freedom comes not from independence, but from surrender to God...When we surrender our will to His, we experience a deeper sense of peace, joy, and fulfillment...He knows exactly what we need, since He is the Creator of All Things...
Human beings, by nature, desire this freedom and control over their lives...We strive for independence, seeking to chart our own course and make our own decisions, and be around those who we want to be around....However, the pursuit of complete independence often leads to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and ultimately, a sense of emptiness...We must realize God made us and He is our Creator...God is ultimately in control of all things, even when we feel like we are in charge...Our lives are ultimately in His hands, and He is the Author of our story and with us in our journey through our lives...
Jesus calls us to a life of interdependence, where we rely on Him for our strength, guidance, and fulfillment...Jesus, as the Good Shepherd, knows us intimately...He leads us to green pastures, provides for our needs, protects us from harm, and gives us an abundant life...He guides us with gentleness and compassion, always seeking our well-being...Now we can fight this, but it does not work...We can resist this, we can fight against His guidance, but it will not work...True freedom comes not from independence, but from surrender to God...When we surrender our will to His, we experience this deeper sense of peace, joy, and fulfillment...We find that His thoughts are not His thoughts and His ways are indeed no our ways, but higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts...In Him, we find the true meaning of life, a life of purpose, joy, and eternal significance...This surrender, though counterintuitive to our natural desires, ultimately leads to true freedom and a life of abundant joy in Christ...
John 15 challenges the human desire for independence and offers a compelling alternative: a life of interdependence with God, characterized by love, obedience, and the joy of abiding in His Presence...
