Luke 10:38-42
Mary Listening
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
John 15:16
Jesus Chose His Disciples
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit--fruit that will last--and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.
Matthew 24:35
Jesus' Words Will Never Pass Away
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away
Sometimes I say things that I have said over my life are not as relevant or very important...And for me, talking is easier than listening...One can talk with less attention and a lesser attention span, but to be a good listener, one must pay close attention to what is being said...Some things said often don't have much meaning and we do not remember what of a lot of things that we heard each day...And I think talking is not as hard to do as what it takes to listen...And often we need a good listener, especially when times get tough for us and we are going through troubled times...
As I read about Mary and Martha, I get the feeling Mary is a good listener...I feel when Jesus chose His Disciples they would have too, would be good listeners or would become good listeners...They would have to listen closely to Him, to learn from what He was saying...He often spoke in difficult parables...And He uttered the greatest words ever spoken, and what He has said has changed the world...He never said irrelevant things...He said and meant every word He spoke...When He spoke everyone should listen and take note...His words have changed the world...His words will never pass...
