The Embed option has two options LTI and Webpage. We currently tend to use the Webpage option to embed both third party content and interactives developed by our in-house DX team.
Visit the DX showcase to see what the DX team can do for you.
Care must be taken with any accounts used for any third party services to ensure continued access. Do not use a personal email account.
The embedded web page element is possibly the most flexible element available in iQuailify. It allows embedding of external web pages and interactives developed by our talented DX team.
Embedded web page elements can be placed within the context of the page content, allowing lead in and reflective content to surround the element. Multiple embedded web pages may be used or an item may appear by itself on a page.
Old-timers will remember that we used to have the option to upload interactives developed by DX as a ZIP file.
This has now been replaced with another method:
DX will provide a Review Link for you to check the interactive. Note this is a temporary link and will not work embedded into iQualify.
DX will then provide an Embed Link to use within iQualify. Note this link will only work in iQualify.
Simply select the Embed element from the plus + menu and then choose Webpage.
This will bring up the Web page settings dialog box shown below.
TIP: Remove any trailing spaces after the URL - iQualify gets grumpy.
Here we enter the URL of the external site or the link supplied by DX.
Other common elements are the size, introduction and attribution.
It is recommended that you keep the width at its default of 920. For the height, first try leaving it blank. If it doesn't look right, enter a height. It can sometimes take a few guesses before finding the best size.
An optional introduction can be added. This will appear above the embedded item.
An optional attribution (for example, copyright) can be added. This will appear under the embedded item.
Embedding an external website is often as simple as pasting the URL into the appropriate field.
Some points to note:
The website URL must start with https://, which indicates that it is secure.
Some websites don’t allow their content to be embedded.
There may be restrictions on what can be done with an embedded page.
Some websites may require the use of their embed code – see below.
Some websites will require you to use their embed code to allow embedding. The embed code is usually found under a heading of ‘Share’ and may also include links to social media and a share link. We need to use the embed code.
Just as with the full embed code sometimes provided by our video team, we only need a small part of it – the source.
repl.it is a great resource allowing the presentation of live code. However, simply using the URL from the browser will not work as an embedded web page.
Original URL from browser: https://repl.it/@BIT608OpenPoly/Variables-examples
However, we can use part of the embed code to successfully embed this resource. Here is the embed code for this example page, with the section we want highlighted.
<iframe height="400px" width="100%" src="https://repl.it/@BIT608OpenPoly/Variables-examples?lite=true" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="true" sandbox="allow-forms allow-pointer-lock allow-popups allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-modals"></iframe>
For all sites it will be the text starting with src="Copy this bit" .
The URL to use from the embed code would be: https://repl.it/@BIT608OpenPoly/Variables-examples?lite=true
The repl.it example embded into an iQualify page.
The embedded web page can of course be used for much more exciting things such as interactive 3D visualisations, such as this car example from three.js and heart visualisation from Zygote Body.
Examples of 3D visualisations running in iQualify.
To ensure continued access to third party services it’s important to record any usernames and passwords required. Unless there has already been an Open Polytechnic subscription set up, the following process is recommended:
Create a gmail account that will be used for all third party services for the course.
Use this email account to register for the service.
Save all account details in a word document called ‘Passwords’ and save it to the course working folder.
It’s important to ensure that the resource is anonymously available so that learners can access it without having to log in to that service. Test this by opening up an incognito window in Chrome and accessing the course.
