Quizzes

Overview

There are two types of quiz: practice (formative) and assessed (summative or real-time assessments). One practice quiz from each course can be turned into a knowledge check quiz if required.

Properties of all quizzes

• Questions are randomly drawn from a larger question bank based on the theme. This is automatic and is a default setting. At each attempt (if there’s more than one), the question the student gets asked is drawn randomly from the theme. Although students will most likely see a different question from each theme, they may be served up the same question. By default one question per theme is displayed at each attempt. You can change this for practice quizzes (see below for details).
• Questions types are as follows:
  • multiple-choice (practice and assessed)
  • multiple-select (practice and assessed)
  • matching (one-to-one or one-to-many) (assessed only).
• Answer choice order can be randomised for multiple-choice questions using the Randomize column in the quiz spreadsheet. This feature is not available yet, so leave the value as FALSE.
• Both assessed and practice quizzes are shown in the Facilitator dashboard in iQualify.

Properties of practice quizzes only

• Questions must contain feedback.
• Questions can optionally contain a hint.
• In Build you can choose how many questions students should be asked for each theme. The default is one.

Properties of assessed quizzes only

• Questions don’t contain feedback or a hint.
• Quizzes are timed.
• Quizzes can only be taken a set number of times.
• Quizzes can be 100% mandatory (progressive quiz). After each attempt, learners will only be asked (variants of) questions that they answered incorrectly. This continues until learners either reach the minimum pass mark or run out of attempts. If the quiz isn't 100% mandatory, each attempt is a new attempt. This is specified in Build, in the Assessment items section.

Creating a quiz

Quizzes are a special type of unit and are initially created in the Content area by selecting the cog wheel and then Add quiz, as shown below.

Give it a name as you would when adding a normal unit, and then select the cog wheel and select Preview/Edit.

This will take you to the following page. Select Insert quiz.

This will bring up a the following dialog box.

Quizzes may be assessed or practice quizzes. The default, shown above, is assessed. This can be toggled by selecting either the Assessed or the Practice button. Below is the setting for a practice quiz.

If you select a practice quiz, additional options are added:

• the number of questions to ask per theme
• whether a diagnostics chart should be displayed.

Quiz templates

Quizzes are created from a specially formatted spreadsheet. The most up-to-date template, example and notes can be downloaded from this dialog box, as shown below.
