Volleyball Pre-Season: Perspective from the Court

My name is Aaliyah V., and I am a player on Galileo’s volleyball team. I play on the A-team which is the middle school equivalent of a varsity team. This article is going to be the 1st of 3 articles covering the events of the A-Team's season.

Preseason:

Tryouts were held on Monday, February 28th, 2022, and Tuesday, March 1st, 2022, both days tryouts were 4-5:30 pm. On Monday we were tested on receiving and serving. Receives are when a player will go down close to the ground and put their arms together to receive it, also called bumping it, and getting it to a setter. Serving is right after a point is is gained by a specific team to start the beginning of a volley, or the back and forth of the ball between teams. On Tuesday we practiced receiving, serving, spiking, and were tested on setting. Spiking is when you hit the ball over the net to the opponents' side to gain a point. Setting is when a player uses both their arms and wide hands to get the ball high enough for a hitter to spike it down. On Tuesday, we also got to know what team we would be on.

On Saturday, March 12th, 2022 both A-team and B-team had a preseason scrimmage tournament. A scrimmage is when multiple teams/schools went against each other. These matches were twenty-five minutes each and were not scored. We played 5 teams, Russell, Swigert, Mann, North, and Sabin. After we played Sabin, our last match, we had to take the nets down. All teams had great sportsmanship and by the end of the scrimmage all the players were helping each other out.

When this is published we will have 1 game left, a pool play, and the district classic. All games start at 4:30 pm.

Monday Apr 4, 2022 : Home game against Swigert. B-Team starts at 4:30 pm. A-Team starts around 5:30 pm.
