How COVID-19 has Affected Us As A Community at Galileo

Covid-19 changed a lot of things, including our community at Galileo.

The biggest changes were on March 13th, when we found out we were going to move to remote learning for 2 weeks. Those weeks were very surprising and stressful because everyone didn’t really know what was happening. When the situation got very real, we needed to take the situation very seriously, Mr. Miller, our principal, and Mr. McDowell, our assistant principal, knew it was going to be very difficult and different, so they were thinking about the students, teachers and everyone’s safety.

The hardest part of everything changing for Mr. Miller and Mr. McDowell was that everyone had a lot of questions that they couldn't answer because they didn't know what was going to happen in the future. Another challenge for them was that everyone had to get used to a new website, Schoology, that no one really knew how to work. The next challenge for them was when we started the year. It was a lot harder because we started the year remotely, and we couldn’t really predict what was going to happen in the future because Covid-19 is something that we’ve never seen before.

The way it personally affected Mr. Miller was it gave him different feelings. At first he was in denial for a while, then got sad because he missed it being normal. He missed having students and teachers being in school, he missed coming to school and having students there because he thought school was a safe spot for everyone.

Mr. McDowell was personally affected at first because he was kind of worried. Because like I said before, we have never seen Covid-19 before. But when we got used to it and got to know it a little bit more, he was a lot more comfortable with our life style changes.

The reason why Mr. Miller and Mr. McDowell changed how Galileo was going to be is because they were required to, due to the guidelines everything would always change. Everyone had to follow the rules to make sure everyone was safe and everyone would put effort into it. But as Mr. McDowell said,

“We did an amazing job following the guidelines and being safe so that made it a lot easier.”

As the pandemic goes on, I would really like to recommend to wear a mask and following the safety guidelines so we can all be safe!
