It was Winter and No One Could Play.

Dr. James Naismith was a football coach and it was winter so none of the boys could play. The boys played in gyms but they would get hurt way too much. So Naismith came up with an idea, he grabbed a crate and two soccer balls, and then threw a ball into the crate.

Naismith's Great Idea

He thought this would help the boys aim with the football. When spring came, Naismith felt like something changed. None of the boys were practicing football. They were still throwing the ball into the crate. That is when Naismith came up with an idea.

The Success of his Game Idea

¨Why not make this a game that kids could play all around the world."

He needed a name, so he came up with a simple name "Basketball" which originated on December 21, 1891.

He went to the news to show his great idea and it went worldwide. Kids were playing this game making it into the basket. Naismith came up with a better idea of cutting the bottom of the crate and put it on a pole with a back.
