BLM Protests
The Black Lives Matter Protests took place in May and June and continued through Summer 2020. Many people across the world, as well as in all 50 states, were protesting to be heard by our government and our community. All races and all ages of people were out there trying to get justice for black people and attempting to have their voices heard.
What leads up to all the protests? On May 25, 2020, another black life had been lost due to police brutality. Some of you may be wondering why didn’t we have BLM protests for all the other black lives that were lost? I cannot really answer that, but I am guessing after George Floyd died, everyone was fed up and they wanted justice.
So, let me tell you how the protests went in summer 2020. At some protests, police officers became violent while protesters were trying to peacefully get their voices heard. These protesters did not start violence until after the fact the police was tear gassing them, shooting them with rubber bullets, arresting, beating them with their batons, and taking 19+ peoples' lives away.
I was reading about these protests and watching the news and it reminded me of the movie “The Hate U Give.” In the movie, similar events were happening. The movie “The Hate U Give” basically represents the saying “No Justice, No Peace.” In this movie, a young black man was killed by a police officer because the police officer thought he had a weapon in his car. Mind you, the police officer killed him in front of the person that was in the car with the black man. So, she was a witness and she wanted justice for her friend and fought until he got justice.
Riots at the U.S. Capitol
On January 6th, 2021, there were angry Trump supporters storming the United States Capitol, started by mob supporters of Donald Trump. These riots started because, as you guys may know, Donald Trump lost the presidential election to Joe Biden which took place in November. Then some of the people that were in these riots thought that it was ok to break into the U.S Capital and damage many of the valuable items inside.
There are many differences that took place during the protests in summer 2020 and the riots at the U.S. Capitol. One of those differences is that it is not fair. At the Capitol, not as many people were harmed, and police officers did not guard the Capitol the same way they were guarding the people at the BLM protests.
In Conclusion
To sum it all up, the year 2020 will go down in the history books and it will be a year everyone remembers. When will everyone be treated equally? How many more black lives will be lost due to police brutality for them to understand that it is not right?
