The 8th grade continuation ceremony happened on May 10th, 2021 during advisory in the auditorium!

But what is the 8th grade continuation ceremony?

The 8th grade continuation ceremony is an event that the school has for 8th graders to let them know that they are acknowledged for all the hard work they do. 8th graders went to the auditorium with their advisory class, and were in a straight line while they waited for their names to be called by their teacher. They will also walk on the stage to Mr. Miller and he will hand them a certificate that will have their full name and a little note that tells the 8th graders that they have completed the curriculum for the year.

Mr. Miller wanted the 8th grade continuation ceremony to be similar to the traditional 8th grade continuations. He had the 8th graders dress formally, and had in-person and online students attend and if they couldn't come to school, they had them be in a webex call. The video will also be edited together to the webex call, and released at the end of the school year to send to the families so they could watch it. District 11´s film production crew helped the recording so the videos would look nice to send to the families.

Mr. Miller made a short two minute speech for the students that was usually just talking about being able to see the good in people with everything going on. He also talked about how it is important having to treat each other with respect, and kindness.

The most difficult part of the 8th grade ceremony was not being able to usually have it at Michell high school, and inviting parents and families to watch in the auditorium. They also did not have parents go to the ceremony for Covid based safety reasons. There were also different ideas to celebrate the continuation, so they had a difficult time picking out the right idea. But besides that, the 8th grade continuation went well, it was quiet but turned out really nice.

Mr. Miller said, ¨I wanted something that they could be proud of.¨

Something that he wants is having the two last weeks of school being super fun, so the students can have something they could remember about the experience being at Galileo School of Math and Science. Mr. Miller is going to miss the 8th graders so much because when he first came to the school he was with the 8th graders when they first started middle school.

Good luck to all the 8th graders who are all going to high school. I hope you guys had such a fun time and good experiences at Galileo School of Math and Science! Even if some of the moments were not so good, I hope that those experiences will help you go on with life, and teach you things. Have a good rest of the school year and summer guys!!
