Higher Than the Moon

Scratchboard, scratchboard ink

The goal for this project was to make all the lines super crisp and clean, I also wanted the color to be vibrant and contrast with each other. I wanted to make something that kind of reflected some of my past work. This moon kind of reminded me of my zoomed shoe drawing, that was my favorite project this year and I really wanted my final to have the same vibe as that one did.

I thought scratchboard was such a fun material to use when we did it as a class, and I knew that I would probably choose it for my final project. The only tools I used were the little scratchboard scraper with the red handle, and a paintbrush to paint the scratchboard ink onto the scratchboard.

My process when creating my final was to scratch away all the black where I was going to put color first, paint it with the ink, and then add the designs. I had never used the scratchboard inks before and it was interesting to try them for the first time. It was kind of difficult because the inks wouldn't distribute evenly the first few swipes, but after awhile it would spread out and cover the white. It took a few coats to get a solid color down and to be able to scratch away at it. I was going to make the smoke purple but by the end I thought that it looked cooler if it was just pure white. I really like this project and I am happy with how it turned out.
