Long-Tailed Duck
9" x12"
Colored Pencil and Ink on Bristol Board
My main focus working on this project was to blend all the colors together. I wanted there to be no visible lines or spots where the white of the paper came through. I also focused on Making all the proportions of the duck look accurate and realistic. I intended to give myself as much time as I could to work on the ducks but Ended up spending most of my time on the water.
I used primarily colored pencils for the entire project. I used a graphite pencil to do the outline sketches of the ducks and a little bit of ink on the darker spots on the ducks. I used only colored pencils for the water, I used about 10 or more different colors to create the water.
My process when doing this piece was to give myself a lot of time on the duck part of the piece. I did give myself enough time to do the ducks but I ended up wasting that time on the water because I was dreading doing the ducks. For the water I layered down color after color and created a ripple effect with darker blues and greens. The first layer I put down was a Light blue which allowed me to have a base instead of starting on a blank white paper. I outlined the duck figures vaguely so that I knew where the ducks were going to be placed and so I knew not to color inside the outline.
