Deep Water

Acrylic paint

18" x 24"

This was the final piece in the sustained investigation projects. And for this last piece I wanted to represent the feeling of dreaming. And the way I wanted to represent that was through the metaphor of water surrounding me, showing that I am drowning in sleep. I wanted all three of the projects to be connected in some way visually, so the water I painted here was the underneath of the water from my second sustained investigation.

I used acrylic for the whole project, I mixed the different shades of tan to represent the shadows of my reference picture. I used a round paint brush to pick up globs of paint so that I could dot them onto the paper within the lines of the hands. For the background I started very light and mixed darker shades of the blue to represent the water getting deeper as it got closer to the unseen portion of my body.

I did not get to finish this project, I selected a very large piece of canvas paper not knowing what I wanted to achieve. Because of the paper's scale it took me hours to do the dollups of paint. If I were to have chosen a smaller piece of paper I definetly think that I could have finished the project within the assigned time. If I had spent more of my time on it I think that it couldv'e turned out super cool. I think that the water turned out almost exaclty how I wanted it to look which was very satisfying to me.
