Spiral of Splattered Whales

Ink splatter, graphite, and eventually colored pencil

9' x 6'

This project we took a splattered ink print and turned it into something else, immediately the first thing that I saw when I looked at the paper was a shark or whale. I wanted to use the ink splatter to show a scene of whales coming up from the depths of the water to the surface.

There was the splatter of ink and then I only used graphite to sketch out the whales, I had wanted to add color to the project, but I didn't end up having time to add it in. What I turned in for the class was the simple sketch outline. I plan to add color later on with colored pencils.

The first thing that I saw on the page was a shark, since what I saw was an aerial view, I tried to figure out how to draw the tails and dorsal fins as seen from the top I had looked up a reference picture, but  I couldn't quite figure the perspective out and I didn't want to focus on that so I changed my ideas to whales. I think when I changed my idea to draw whales instead of sharks, it allowed the art to portray a deeper meaning which I like much better.
