For this project, we had to create a piece that represented duality. Duality is things that aren't quite opposite but stem from each other. I didn't really know what exactly I wanted to do, but I thought it would be cool to make bookends. I came up with a couple of ideas, one was two waves colliding together that would be dark and light, and another was two clouds, where one would be dark and one would be light. I decided to go with he clouds because I thought it would be easier.
To start, I sketched out a template of the body. I rolled out a couple of slabs and traced my template twice on the slab with them facing each other. I then cut them out as well as a couple of rectangular pieces to make it 3D. I stretched the rectangular/wall pieces to one side and let them dry a little bit. I also added a beam in the middle for support. Once it was leather hard, I attached the second side. I decided that I wanted to have a sun sitting on top, so I repeated the process, but this time to make a sun which I then attached to the cloud. I poked holes in each closed part to let the air out when it's being fired. I then repeated the process the exact same way to make 2.
Once they were fired, I had to choose the glazes I wanted. I knew I wanted one to be blue and the other to be similar to blue but darker, so I chose purple. I chose yellow for the sun because it seemed logical. I glazed with three coats and wiped off the bottom, then let it be fired again. I like how they turned out. I think they are cool and functional. I do wish I had chosen different glazes. I feel like a dark, deep blue could've been really cool.
