For this project, we had to create a project based on two different artists. I chose Charlotte Grenier and Katharine Eksuzian. Katharine Eksuzian is more of a nature sculptural artist, whereas Charlotte Grenier is more of a functional textural artist. I want to create something nature-inspired but functional and textural. I chose to create a bowl after many other ideas.
I wanted to try to use slabs to create a bowl. I started out by rolling a couple of semi-thick slabs and cutting out a long rectangle. I then made it into a cube shape to see where I had to cut some parts out for it to fold nicely. After I found those spots, I cut out triangle shapes to allow it to create a bowl shape. After that, I created a base to attach my bowl sides to. I then repeated the process to create a cup, which was basically the same thing but smaller. Then I took some lace to create a textured pattern on the sides. It didn't show up as textured as I wanted it, so I carved in some flowers and butterflies and then waited for it to be fired.
Once it was fired, I had to choose my glazes. I knew what glaze I wanted to do already from friends' past projects. I wasn't sure how good it would look with the texture, but I knew I liked the glaze. I put on three coats and then I put it on the shelf to be fired. I really love how this project turned out. I think it might be my favorite.
