Artist Statement; (Sunflower Hand)

The subject of this photo is a hand running through hair. I took this photo by many windows in which you can see all around the subject of the photo. When taking this photo I asked my subject to gently run her fingers through her hair. I captured the photo very easily and quickly. When taking this photo I thought about a few other photos I’ve seen of hands and I thought that this could make a neat photo. To take the photo, I stood on a bench, giving this photo a high horizon line. I also used selective focus to make it clear what the subject of the photo was. To take the photo, I stood on a bench, giving this photo a high horizon line. I also used selective focus to make it clear what the subject of the photo was. Originally, I did not like this photo at all. I thought it was very boring and did not have any complicity to it. I decided to try editing to see if I could change the photo at all to the point where I liked it when I got the idea to try to connect it to my concentration. Originally I just thought that if I added small solid colored images to different places around the hand and hair that it could look neat and I could do a different color for each of my photos. Then I thought about my flower and plant concentration and came up with the idea to overlay an image of a sunflower on top of her hand. I really liked the outcome. Now when I look at this photo, I think of a happy summer day. Yellow is a very happy color and sunflowers remind me of the summer. To have my subjects hand brushing through her hair just makes me think of sitting out in the middle of a field filled with flowers, feeling the wind blow through my hair as I brush my fingers through it. One things that does bother me about this photo is the angle that I took it at. I wish that I had not held the camera crooked when I took this photo.
