For this piece, I started off with the lines from my blind contour drawing and as I turned the paper around and looked at it differently, I knew that my hand was going to stay a hand and that my face was going to stay a face but I didn’t want it to be a human. The more I looked at it, the more I started to see a lion’s head.
For the blind contour I used a sharpie and for my extending of the image, I used 2B and 4B pencils, charcoal and charcoal pencils, and a ruler to measure the lines in the background.
I started of with the blind contour in sharpie which was putting a piece of paper over the top of the sharpie so I couldn’t see what I was drawing. I did one of my hand and one of a ‘self portrait’. Once my blind contour was completed and I had set on the idea of a lion head, I went back in with the sharpie to create a sleeve on the hand and facials for the lion. I then took charcoal and went around the edges of the head creating little lines in charcoal. I then went through with the charcoal pencil to add more detail and different sized lines for the mane. Once the head and the hand were done, I took a ruler and measured out lines about an inch and a half or so which I then shaded every other very lightly with the 4B pencil.Originally, I had a completely different blind contour and I didn’t see it going anywhere because it was just a jumbled mess of tons of lines all in one place and I couldn’t think of anything so I recreated my blind contour which I was then very happy with. I definitely think my next steps would be to shade more and make it look more realistic but I like the simplicity of it so honestly, I think I would leave it as is.
