Artist Statement;
For this project, we were allowed to chose any photo we liked, the only restriction was that it had to be an image you had taken. I chose this image that I took of my friend Connor at a football game at the beginning of the school year. The first step was to put your photo in black and white and adjust the values so that there were bright whites and dark blacks. Once that was done I began gridding out my image and then did a 1.5"x1.5" grid on my piece of paper. We used grey toned paper and I chose a bluish toned paper.
The materials I used for this project were charcoal sticks, three charcoal pencils, white pencils, white charcoal sticks, tortillions, and ink. The project is Mixed Media and the only requirements were that we found a way to incorporate both charcoal and ink. I started off with charcoal sticks for all the dark dark areas. Once those were done, I used charcoal pencils for the smaller details and the subject. Throughout this process, I went square by square from the top left to the bottom right. Once I had all the background done, I came to the field were I used ink and water to create a light grey.
Now that I am looking at the original image right next to mine, I see many different things that I could have done to improve my work. For one, I didn't realize that the white spot in the middle right was a person in the background from the image I printed out. Also, I wish that I had used a straightedge for the lines of the field because I realize they are very crooked and not even straight.
