Artist statement:

Title: The abstracta-bowl.

The project that we were assigned to make was a form that was inspired by an artist of our liking. The artist that I was very much inspired by was Stanton Hunter because of his use of all of these realistic and abstract designs that he uses through his personal artwork. I chose to create a pinch pot bowl and stack it on two square slabs of clay with some interesting abstract designs in the bowl. We were only given 4 LBs of clay because it was our last project that we had to do and also we did not have much clay left for everyone to do something big.

The materials that I used to make my last project include: some needle tools, brushes and glaze for colors.

I first started by analyzing my inspired artist and finding out which techniques he incorporated into his art that really stand out. Then I had to use the techniques that he used himself to create my own project that was inspired by his creative art. Finally, once I knew what I wanted to do, I started rolling out my clay and putting my project together. Based on my previous projects I made sure that it would not dry out, so each time that I left the table I was working at, I would cover my project up each time and make sure that it would not dry. I also made sure to not overwork the clay as much and to make sure it was the right thickness that I wanted. My project was going really well until it fired the first time but for some reason blew up. But that was not really much of a problem, instead glazed the bottom together with the bowl so it would fuse together, which it did very nicely.

With this project I wanted to create a design that looked similar to the way my 7th-grade bowl looked, so that's partially why I made it so abstract. But one of the things I would probably improve to make this project better would be to find other ways to incorporate some abstract designs instead of just inside the bowl, and not overthink things a little too much which I feel I did a little with the project. But I am very happy with the way it turned out and the way it looks, almost like the thickness of a festive cookie or the looks of something sweet.
