Dreamlands Bibliography

DM: Tim Emrick

The following list contains material that I have found useful in running my Dreamlands D&D games. Not all of the RPG works listed here were written for D&D, but all provided useful background material and ideas.

Fiction

Lovecraft, H.P. The Doom That Came to Sarnath and Other Stories. Ballantine, 1971. Dream-tales in this volume include the title story, "The Other Gods", "The Cats of Ulthar", and "The Quest of Iranon".

--. The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Ballantine, 1970. Contains HPL's only novella-length dream-tale (the title story), plus shorter tales such as "Celephais" and "The White Ship".

Myers, Gary. The House of the Worm. Arkham House, 1975. A collection of stories set in Lovecraft's dream-world.

Smith, Clark Ashton. Hyperborea. Ballantine, 1971. A collection of tales; "The Seven Geases" features the serpent people.

D&D

Davis, Graeme. "Dead Man's Quest", in Dungeon #107 (February 2004).

--. Tales of Freeport. Green Ronin, 2003.

"The Freeport Trilogy": Death in Freeport (Chris Pramas); Terror In Freeport (Robert J. Toth); Madness in Freeport (William Simoni). Green Ronin, 2000-2001. The classic trilgy of pirates and unspeakable cults. Watch the Green Ronin website for my 3.5 revisions of these adventures (available 2004).

Green Ronin Publishing. Several free online resources, including "Focus on Freeport" and a forum devoted to the setting.

Kirby, Brian E., et al. Black Sails Over Freeport. Green Ronin, 2003.

Pramas, Chris, and Matt Forbeck. Freeport: The City of Adventure. Green Ronin, 2002. The main sourcebook for all things Freeport.

System Reference Document:

Wilkes, Chris (ed.). Denizens of Freeport. Green Ronin, 2003.

Call of Cthulhu

Aniolowski, Scott David. Ye Booke of Monstres. (The Aniolowski Collection, Volume I.) Chasoium, 1994.

Appel, Shannon. "The Children of Yig". An article on the serpent people, reprinted from Starry Wisdom.

--. "The Masters of Space and Time". An article on the Yithians, reprinted from Starry Wisdom.

Balsley, Erica. DnDChick's Call of Cthulhu d20 Page. Conversions of CoC monsters that weren't included in the d20 book, as well as a few original creations. Includes a Dreamlands page. [UPDATE: This site no longer exists.]

Cook, Monte, and John Tynes. Call of Cthulhu d20 Roleplaying Game. Wizards of the Coast, 2002. A d20 conversion of CoC, so compatible with D&D Third Edition (and includes an appendix about porting between the two games). Not much Dreamlands-specific material, but many standard creature, tomes, spells, etc., can be used as is.

Detwiler, Dennis, and Mike Mearls. "The Green Box: An Out of Body Experience", in d20 Weekly (October 9, 2002). A template for Yithians possessing human bodies.

Harms, Daniel. Encyclopedia Cthulhiana, First Edition. (Cycle Book 5.) Chaosium, 1994.

Herber, Keith. Keeper's Compendium. Chaosium, 1993.

Petersen, Sandy, and Lynn Willis. Call of Cthulhu, Fifth Edition. Chaosium, 1993.

Ross, Kevin. The Dreaming Stone. Chaosium, 1997. An adventure for "waking world" PCs, but many sections should be easy to adapt for natives.

Schmid, Justin. The Bermuda Triangle. Chaosium, 1998.

Williams, Chris, and Sandy Petersen. The Complete Dreamlands, Fourth Edition, Revised and Expanded. Chaosium, 1997. The main Dreamlands resource for (original) Call of Cthulhu, therefore essential for Dreamlands games in other systems. Includes the Dreamlands map upon which mine here was based.

Other RPGs

Hite, Kenneth. GURPS Horror, Third Edition. Steve Jackson Games, 2002. Much useful advice on horror gaming from one of the writers of d20 Cthulhu.
