The vanara's village is built on platforms and rope bridges strung between several immense trees, a hundred or more feet above the jungle floor. The river passes between these great trees, so that the vanara need only lower a rope and bucket to draw water up to their homes.
The central tree is the largest, and bears the largest platforms, where the tribes leaders live with their mates and children.
The leader of the village is Magooka, an elderly, vanara oracle who everyone in the tribe addresses as "Grandfather." This mystic's lameness is not a result of his age, but of his oracle's curse; though frail, he is still plenty nimble among the trees, just slower than his kinfolk. He is a "spirit speaker," able to communicate with forest creatures and commune with the jungle itself.
An experienced monk named Tillalei leads the tribe in matters of defense and security. She is very protective towards her people, but most especially towards "Grandfather," who is her uncle. She trains a class of novice monks in the ways of unarmed combat and mystical meditation.
The other leaders of the tribe include three priests of the ape goddess Der-Maga (see Religions of Gorilla Island for details).
